L48'S WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE
« on: July 07, 2011, 01:43:44 AM »
It might make things easier on all of us if we knew ahead of time, which members own these cars, so if the need arises, we know who to contact with specific questions.

Like the Subject suggests...ALL L48's (67-69) and...drivetrain or no drivetrain...paint or no paint...tires or no tires...I think you get the picture. The information I would like to have is the following;

a) 2 pics of your choice (if you have trouble posting these PM me & I will be happy to do it for you)
b) Build Date (so it must have a trim tag)
c) VIN#
d) Engine Stamp (if it has one)
e) Exterior Paint Code (again...must have a trim tag)
f) Options

...And please keep discussions to a minimum. If more discussions are necessary please start another thread. This is more about documenting these cars and their owners in one convenient location.

Thanks!

As usual my fingers get ahead of my brain...how can you not have dialogue while looking at these cars. After all, isn't this topic under, "General Discussion". And what better place to familiarize ourselves with the L48 and ask questions then as these cars are posted? So, feel free to generally discuss...

Please keep the pics and info coming.

It is a lock and ignition cut off.
Uses a barrel lock key mounted under the dash.
Push it in it kills the ignition and locks the hood.
I used to drive her to work every day in a less then pseudo safe neighborhood.
It was the best solution while I figured out if I was going to install a remote key-less entry and alarm once the restoration was finished.
That was 29 years ago LOL

That lock was marketed in the Northeast as a Chapman Lock.  I installed many of them at the Chevrolet dealership I worked at.  You could buy just the hood lock which consisted of the lock and a built in kill switch, or they had a complete alarm system with motion sensor, voltage drop sensor and siren.  I am not sure when they first came out.  I remember for sure installing them in the 80's, but don't recall if they were available in the 70's.

Mine still has the lock cylinder on the right front fender, the door jamb switches and the trunk lid switch. The previous owner took the siren off when he sold the car to me.

John or Chris,

When I had my breather lid chromed, the company asked if I wanted it chromed on the bottom. I was surprised because I didn't know it was possible to do one side and not the other. Are your lids chromed on both sides? In addition, does anyone know where I can purchase a seal for the lid?

Yeah sort of. Its plated but its not high lustre. I dont know enough about the plating process to know how its done, but I'll say only the top is chrome.
