1969 - Orphans / Re: 69 Z 19N687352 Original Block
« on: July 07, 2013, 09:22:10 PM »
Pad looks good, btw. :)
1) The 'stamping' itself 'looks' good, but I understand there are 'restampers' who can duplicate original stamps/holders?
2) The original broach marks are not visible in the supplied photo, but all kinds of horizontal and diagonal lines are  very visible, which is suspicious.
3) The engine assembly date of 0724 is more than 2 months after the 0522 cast date, which is very unusual, and also suspicious, in my experience.
4) The VIN provided of 687352 could not be confirmed from the pix (by me), but that VIN corresponds to 18-19 September 1969, which is a day or two after my Z28 was built.   This also raises suspicions as my engine was cast on 0826 and assembled on 0827.

I'd have to see a LOT more information and examine the engine before I'd feel good about this being an original DZ block...

Trans-Am Camaros / Re: 1968 Trans-Am season review
« on: July 07, 2013, 08:14:34 PM »
that's an interesting note re 'one of the Trans Am car manufacturers to homologate independent rear suspensions for '69-1/2' trans am cars, without new tooling...     I assume that was Chevrolet/GM considering that?   re the already existing Corvette IRS???    Can anyone expound on that possibility and what happened to prevent it??

Not sure this is accurate, but per an internet search, FCO in international trading is:

Full Corporate Offer .

This is the final, detailed, specific offer that the seller is sending to the buyer.   Makes sense?

Originality / Re: Engine hook bolts on manifold
« on: July 04, 2013, 05:26:06 PM »
Edgemontvillage was referring to the engine orange on the head surface between the valve cover and intake manifold... ie. the upper part of the machined surface for intake gasket...  which normally would not get painted on such an engine (with aluminum manifold and aluminum valve covers)..

I was also in MD at the Camaro Nats, and greatly enjoyed it, meeting great people and seeing some fantastic cars.   What year? and which one was yours??

Are you referring to the chambered cross mufflers?   Allens does make the chambered system as well as regular systems for all kinds of collector cars...

Originality / Re: GM silver for Rally wheels.

and also from Team Chevelle forum, Rustynutznrods writes:....

"Eastwood makes a Hotcoat Argent Silver base (part # 10102). The issue with silver powder coating is that they all require a clear topcoat. It's not a bad solution if you're not concerned with originality. But it's obvious to the experienced eye that the finish is not original.

We've done a lot of wheels in satin black powder coat with the correct Argent Silver sprayed on the wheel face. The paint codes are DuPont 9692L or Ditzler DQE-8568. "

From a search:
(Chevelles forum)
"The 1969 reference page here:    http://www.chevellestuff.com/1969/paint.htm
says this:
The lower body panel on Malibus for Argent Silver is DuPont mixing formula 927-95905 or 41253, Ditzler (PPG) color number is DE-8568."

and ...
"Argent Silver is PPG #8568
Ditzler DE-8568
DuPont 42153
Ditzler DQE-8568

you're right John.. :)
- experienced engineers generally begin with past designs, look at what's been done before, and verify that it's good w/o problems and doesn't need changes
- 'younger', less experienced engineers sometimes like to ignore past designs and history, and do everything 'anew'...
:)

That said, do you have similar GM requirements spec information for '69 pulleys, in particular the smog pulley?

thanks.. :)
I'd been very hesitant to try disassembling for fear or ruining it..
so now, armed with your 'it can be done'..  I will go ahead and do it!  :)

Thanks John,

It's probably safe to assume that this spec didn't change much between '67 and '69...?   :)

Restoration / heater control restoration?
« on: June 27, 2013, 02:27:54 PM »
Is it possible to disassemble an original heater control such as the one *(already disassembled)* in this ebay ad
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400518010421&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123

... and get it back together correctly with original components?    This is not mine, but my original one has some of the 'shrinkage' in the lettered black backing.   What's necessary or available to replace that black ?paper? part?   Do the control knobs just 'pull off'? and will they push back on and stay?  I'm very hesitant to disassemble my good original part unless I now it can be reassembled properly.

Those appear to be the Chevrolet OTC items that were available in the mid '70's.
