1968 Z28 smog tubes

Were the smog tubes on a cowl plenum car the same as the smog tubes used on a open breather car?

One set of std. tubes were used on the 68 Z28 and they do not work with a CP air cleaner.  The right side will not clear the duct.

These CP air cleaners came in the trunk and it was up to the dealer or new owner to deal with installiing the air cleaner.  That meant removing the smog stuff.  There is a right side Nova tube with 90 degree angle that will work but it is not technically correct.

Would the nova part cause deductions on a judging sheet?

It's a catch 22 situation.  There would be a deduction.  The plenum AC was not designed to work in concert with the smog eq.  Everyone took it off and threw it away.,

I am having the same problem.Should I ditch the smog and go with the repop factory headers??Smog and the cp look goofy together.I bet every car that received a cp also got a set of headers. The headers look real nice with the cp,looked at Jerrys pics a hundred times. The smog system is original to the car and is mint and so are the original tubes. Once the car is done there is no changing it back. Also I have loads of docs ,window sticker, order sheet ect..So anyone could see it never had headers or a cp. But 67 68 z/28 are real plain looking and the cp and headers add alot of snap under the hood. The hole is cut in the firewall already ,but the headers are in the basement . The smog tube under the cp will always look incorrect .What should I do? John

Yes it is hard to believe that the indent is on the cp which to me would mean it was meant to work with the smog.

That is a good question.  I can tell you that most people did not get the headers because it doubled the cost of the Z28 option.  Not cost effective.  And the Hooker headers were a better header so most added them after the purchase of the car.  I have only seen two documented cars that had both.  My white car and Sam Bishop's dark green Z28.

If you experienced living back in the day, this all makes sensebut to many of the younger generation people who are trying to restore a car today, it's difficult to process why and how things happened back then.

Well put Jerry,I guess I will try and route the hose on a 90 degree angle. I may take an old smog tube and cut the 90 degree tube from it and re-weld it to a tube that I have removed the straight up tube from. It will not be factory correct but that way   I will have a original CP set-up with original smog tube modified. I can tig weld at home,it will give me a project for a while. Thanks Jerry

I have a set of smog tubes that I acquired from Jerry MacNeish years ago. The passenger side tube is rare and built specifically for the Cowl Plenum installation. The passenger side tube sweeps 90 degreees in the direction of the tube itself pointing to the smog pump. It also starts its sweep at the firewall end of the tube to allow room for the hose to connect to the smog pump The drivers side is the same.

Charley,

I got him that '70's Nova tube with the 90 degree bend to clear the air cleaner.  I had explained this was the only way to run both without clearance issues.

This information kinda hit me between the eyes as I have a complete (many parts NOS) smog system purchased years ago and the car is a air cowl plenum car. Now what do I do????? Jerry, there was one magnificent 67 Z/28 (one of one due to COPO paint scheme that looked hugger orange) at this years Legends judging that was restored by Lucas Restoration and painted by East Coast Muscle Cars and that car was a LA car with air cowl air cleaner and smog set up. Are LA cars different or was the Nova tube set up used for that application as well or some other modification that would not deduct points? I'm confused on what to do as I was planning and hoping on having our car judged by the legend judge team.

That's the one Paul. Just one great looking Camaro. Here is a picture of what I'm referring to and wondering how or what they used and it was judged at the show. Again, one great looking Camaro.
