D80 included???
« on: July 20, 2010, 11:53:14 PM »
I have determined that my son's 69 came with the heavy trunk prop rod/spring, which if I understand correctly means it had a rear spoiler fromt he factory, the D80 option. If I further understand it D80 also included the front spoiler. Could the rear spoiler be factory by itself, or was it always with the front spoiler and was anything else included with them? I am just trying to document its original as best I can before I erase any signs of originality, not that it will really matter, I have just spent so much time documenting my Mopars, its a sickness.

Thanks, Kevin

D80 included both front and rear spoilers.

All '69s w/D80 produced in calendar year '68 had a '68 rear spoiler; narrower than the '69. Approximately 01B the '69 spoiler entered production, perhaps on an allocation basis as the '68 was still used on some cars. I know of no Z11 or early-build Yenko with a '68 spoiler.

By 03B or so all had the '69.

Thank you its a 12C car, any dimensions on the 2 spoilers end to end show I can determine if it the original still on the car?

The '68 rear spoiler does not extend to the outer edge of the '69 quarter panel.

Is a 69 trunk lid the same as a 68?  I was able to determine that my spoiler was not factory as the holes were not punched in the trunk lid for the Camaro emblem that had to be moved up.

Yes - original deck lids had the holes die-pierced for the standard emblem location.

This is my 68 trunk lid, upper right corner.  The holes at the bottom would have been pierced if the factory had put on a spoiler so the Camaro Emblem would be above the spoiler.

Thanks, so the original emplem holes would be there in every case (typical) on an original deck lid.

That's my understanding of the way the factory did it.  Dealer add ons, not necessarily so.

Thank you, it has the big support strut, so I'm reasonably sure it was a D80 car, dealers or owner would probably have not changed that even if they added a spoiler. I need to see if the wholes are there and take the paint down to see if the original color is under there. Not that it really matters, just trying to document as best I can.

No there is a research topic on this... please reference, as the changeover to no lower punched holes is believed to coincide with the change of Firebird Production from Lordstown.

Also look for a hole in the front subframe for the center support bar for the front spoiler. Someone here probably has a pic.

Here's a photo of the center support rod attachment to the subframe.
