69 Z/28 oil dip stick question.
« on: February 19, 2008, 01:36:03 PM »
I have seen from other postings that JohnZ's original dip stick is the crimped model. So I know what I need to find but my quesitons is what was the green tipped dip stick used in. So many listings say Z's but but I now know that is incorrect. Thanks!

There was more than one supplier. Green is also correct for small blocks.

Not all green tip dipsticks are the same length.  Some are ~22", others are several inches shorter.

All of the 1969 Z28s that I've seen which are original have a flattened gauge handle.  67 and 68 have the rounded handle with colored tip.  Also have to look for "MS" on the gauge.

Hi Jerry -

My Van Nuys '68 Z/28 dipstick has the rounded handle with a gray colored tip.  Is this the correct color?  Also there is only a "M" stamped on the gauge, not a "MS" has you stated above.  Is this incorrect?  Thanks in advance.

OK, then is back to the search for the flattened handle.
Thanks Jerry!

Paul,

Never seen an original 69 Z with a round handle dip stick.  Most have the "MS" on the gauge but it's not to say that "M" isn't correct.  I'll have to go through my judging notes and see what I have.

Jerry -

My Z/28 is a 1968 (see my original post above).  When you mentioned the "MS" on the gauge in your post I wasn't sure if you were talking about the '68 or '69 model year.  I know from your post above the round handle is correct for a '68, but I'm trying to learn if the gray plastic tip and "M" stamped on the gauge is correct for a '68 Z?  Thanks again!

These pictures show a GM replacement dip stick I purchased about 10 years ago during my restoration.  My car is a Norwood 69Z, built 05A, 1st week of May.

The dip stick is GM P/N-3951576, round handle with green tip, stamped with "M".  The previous owner(s) of my car had customized under the hood with a lot of gloss black and chrome.  The dip stick was not a GM original so I am not sure what original 69 dips sticks looked like.

Is it possible that the replacements had flat handle and replacement had round?

Does anyone with an original car or survivor have the original dip stick they can take pictures of?  I would like to know the plant and build date of your car, and the GM part no. on your stick.

Thanks,

Dave -

My '68 Z dipstick is different than the one in your photos.  It does have the rounded handle like yours, but there is no indentation on the handle where the gauge is pinched into the handle.  Mine has a gray plastic tip in it.  There is no part number stamped into mine.

Here's what is stamped on my gauge:     ADD :                   : FULL                    ENGINE    OIL               M

The distance between the "ADD" and "FULL" colons is exactly 7/8" center to center.  I believe this is the original dipstick, but I'm trying to confirm it with another original '68 Z or F-body expert.     :)

Paul,

Yours is correct for the 68 Z28.  Same as my white survivor Z, all 68 Z28s should have a gray tip on a round handle.  69 302 handles are flat.

Two photos below of my original '69Z dipstick. The one in your photos is a service replacement - the originals didn't have a part number on them, and the handle ring was flat.  :)
