Trunk Spatter Paint Color for 1st Gens.
« on: November 17, 2005, 07:55:15 PM »
I've been in discussing this issue with a friend of mine, and we both came to the conclusion that the trunks in 1st gen cars are supposed to be Grey & White spatter instead of Black & Aqua which is being touted as correct.  We have access to three totally original, non-restored 1st gen cars, from 67 to 69, and all are grey & white.

If that is what is really correct, then why are places like Ricks only selling Black & Aqua??????

Any takers / suggestions / remarks ???

The paint used was described in period refinshing literature as "blue-grey-aqua multi-fleck".

Having the correct paint is only half the battle. It is difficult to replicate the pattern and spatter size. Back in the '80s we used OE paint and never did get it to match in a side-by-side comparison with an original.

I hope I'm not opening up the preverbial Pandora's box, but I can't find any definite answer on this subject.

None of McNeish's books eludes to this.  I thinking is kind of important to get what's right and wrong.....

Could GM used both ????

I've had people "in the know" tell me different things......

What colors were these original cars that you've looked at? Not saying it's impossible, but I can't recall ever seeing a grey/white trunk that was original. I've dealt with 67/68 primarily though, 69's might be different.

Correction:

The 11/71 rev of the R-M 1969 Chevrolet colors lists trunk paint as #844 black-gray-aqua multiflek.

We used it and it matched.

I have a 12D 68 LOS car and it was gray/white, I read in one of my books it was gray white to early mid year production for 68 then changed over black/aqua.  To late right now to dig through my books but I'll look and post what book it's in.  I know you can't believe everything you read but I know what my car had.  GM also still sells the paint and it was a pretty good match, also dries pretty hard unlike the repop stuff.  Not water proof, but water resistant.

My 1967 03D Camaro RS when I bought it had original sheetmetal, original paint and unmolested trunk. Trunk splatter paint was/is black/aqua. I can post pictures later.

William is correct. I checked with Jerry M and he recommended ordering paint from Larry Christensen at christensenZL1@comcast.net if you want the correct Dupont custom color in solvent based form for use in a splatter gun or Schutz gun.

Any info on how high towards the deck lid the spatter went ?  Thanks, Bruce

It varied a lot (imagine yourself leaning into the trunk with a spray gun with instructions NOT to get any on the body color edge of the gutter around the opening); my original Norwood 02D car has coverage right up to the top of the deck lid latch, and most of the inside of the tail panel is covered, along with the hinge boxes and hinge arms.  :)

Here's a pic of my former 02A LA built 69 Z. This car had the best trunk I've ever seen.

Here's a shot of my 69 van nuys car - built in Sept '68.  Looks like Black with grey flecks in the picture - will have to look at it up close again to be sure.
