So what does it take to bend forged steel connecting rods? I'm assuming a race history? How do you do that without damaging the piston and/or crank?

Blown head gasket and resultant hydro lock. Happened on a 396 I had as a kid.

Hi Mike, thanks for the insight. So when you had hydro lock, did it damage the pistons or crank as well? Seems like an aluminum piston would be damaged along with the rod. Maybe break the pin boss, or at least  cause cracks?

I did it with a 327 365hp.  Only the rod was hurt. In fact the engine ran fine, just had a weird sound.

jdv69z - Cracked one piston and bent the rod it was on.  Buckling of the rod beam was a classic "column load" yield failure.  Surprising the engine didn't grenade, but I wasn't twisting its tail when the failure occurred and I shut it down immediately.  Engine got rebuilt at that point and ran fine after. Rod might still be hanging in my dad's garage at the home place, lol...

Yes I remember seeing the results of rod failure in a 396 during drag racing. Big holes in the block, another cylinder with a frozen piston and a rod twisted like a pretzel. I'm not sure the heads were even salvageable. Intake destroyed. A literal explosion.
