Stamping question... Hidden Vin ???

...With all the threads on hidden VIN's lately I got looking through some photos of a '68 vert project of mine.

Has anyone ever seen the hidden VIN not match the VIN tag, ....when it's the MODEL YEAR digit ...sure looks like a "5" when it should be an "8"

(This is an early '68 build of '09A')
(note that this car is UNrestored, ...matching numbers)

...just curious on this. I DON'T see this as a problem since the car is UNrestored with many/most dated original parts, ...and the last 6 digits match just fine. (I couldn't find a photo of the cowl 'hidden' VIN, ...but will be checking soon...)

Nothing looks tampered with, so I woud figure it to just be a screw up. How about the Hidden on the upper cowl?

...well I got out to my car tonight, ...and sure enough, ...the 'hidden' VIN on the cowl also has a "5" as the 1st digit. There's no mistaking it, ...I cleaned it good and it's definitely a "5" (in both places).
Again, ...I don't see this as an issue, ...just very odd...

I think JohnZ told me once that the same machine stamped the hidden VIN at both places, and had to be used twice prior to setting to the next sequential VIN. Therefore, it would make sense that the hidden VINs match. If I'm mistaken, maybe he'll be kind enough to tell me again!

That's correct - same operator, same machine made both hidden VIN hits.

If I'm not mistaken did'nt fisher use a different coding system than chevrolet did.

Fisher didn't stamp the hidden VIN - it was done by Chevrolet in the first station on the Chevrolet hard trim line.
