I am getting ready to get my car painted. Someone took a brush and painted the firewall, inner fenders, radiator shround (you get the idea) black.  I do not have a way to tell how far down the white that was sprayed under the cowl went. Right now it appears they raised where the black went up to the white on the cowl. I wonder if there could be burgandy between the white and black. I tried to wet sand and not much luck.  Here is a picture and would like to see others to compare how to finish mine. Leaving it white would look cleaner but I am thinking there could be some burgandy in there too. From the picture there couldnt be much burgandy if any. Thanks guys

Bill, a couple of photos of my 4C Nor car (original paint). Let me know if you need more detailed photos.

I forgot, what was painted first?  The firewall black or the cowl white?

Had to be the cowl white first - the firewall line is feathered up to the top edge of the firewall, black over the white. Mine looks like white, body color (LeMans blue), black firewall paint in that order. If anything is different, it could be BC first, then white - awfully hard to tell. Maybe this pic sheds a little light on it -

Granted this is on a 68 but should have been the same process I would think..  I do not know why someone painted over the cowl with black but you can see what is underneath.

Earlier cars had more white down the face of the firewall, there is a pic in JM's book of a Nov 68 built Z with a completely white firewall and the black heater box cover sticks out like a sore thumb being black!

Here is the 10D Lemans Blue white stripe car I am finishing.

If you have not seen John's assembly process article, it is great reading.  Here is a link to the section that talks about paint...

I think my friend's car, Mike Thompson who bought this rally green Z new must have had a Monday built car.  I have seen some original cars worst than this one, but this one is pretty bad.  Who would want to duplicate this paint?  This photo was taken when the car was two weeks old.

If thats how it came then that's how I'd want to replicate it, too many of these cars are restored way better than they were built, personally I wish we would get back to closer to original with the differences, that is what is interesting to see. Seeing every car restored just alike is so boring.

BTW, GREAT shot Jerry!

I think what this photo shows is there was a very wide variance in the quality control of Z28 stripes and the way they were applied.  I would say that most of the remaining Z28 population has been modified or painted since they were built.  Survivors are important but even they vary in the way paint was applied.  I get this question from my client base all the time.

How about a dark green firewall - replicate this or?   Appears the factory ran out of black and used next closest color.   Yes, it's original - note the chalk marks on the driver side cowl.

Hans, that's your call.  I would never replicate an exterior body color on the firewall but that's just my opinion.  In my 44 years of being around these cars, yours is one of one that I've seen.
