Steering box is a sign but not proof of being a Z28.

Just start making a list of what parts with the car are correct for a Z28. The more the better.

Real proof is the drivetrain. Again, the more correct parts you have will improve your case of it being a Z.

I would have to go back but is the axle original and what code?

I'd be curious what idlers were used with those 8392 pitmans listed above. I'd assume 7581 idlers.....

It's a multi leaf 12 bolt, BW code. It has 1981 dated 4.10 gm gears in It, but 1968 dated 4:56's in a box.
I have no clue if it's the original housing or not.

What's the build date of the car on the trim tag?  And the axle assembly date? Axle assembly date is the rest of the stamped info after the BW.

If we can determine the axle is original, that's a big step.

Chris, I went ahead and looked through the posts and pics.  I am 99 percent confident it is a Z28.

That is the correct axle for the car in my opinion.  What are the dates on the ring and pinion?

An inspection and report by Jerry M. would be enough proof for anyone.

They are in my shop and I'm at the fire station. I'll get that info when I get off duty in the morning. Thx for looking, I sent tons of pics of the muncie hole in firewall and brake sytem etc etc... To Jerry he said it had to a Z or an SS and he feels that it is likely a Z, however he can't say without the inspection. And that's not exactly cheap.

Where 4.56's an ss option?
BTY, my housing is dated april 24, and the car is 04d. Iooking through your posts, I'd agree pretty safe bet its a Z.

Yes you could get 4.56 with SS. L78 and L89.

Those would probably be original. Date spread is a little larger than I would expect (Feb pinion, March ring gear, June assembly). But they are probably OK and are not common.

I would have thought the ring and pinions would be matched sets ? As in both made in March or Feb?

Just make a list of all the Z parts that you have and their dates. Proof will depend on the amount of evidence.

Depends on what you want to do on certification. If you can get others to come to the same place, Jerry can certify multiple cars. Certification fee won't change but I believe the travel cost can be spread to multiple people if all done at the same time. But you would need to verify that with Jerry first.
