Starter Date Code for September 69 Build
« on: July 01, 2012, 11:34:18 AM »
What is an acceptable date code for an SS-396, 325 hp built in September of 1969?  Thanks for your help.

My 69 L48's build date is 12A (Dec. 68 - 1st wk). My starter date is 8L4 (68-Nov-4Th). Personally, I’d look for something from 1 month to within 2wks prior to your cars build date. If not, up to 3 months prior is acceptable.

Mac,
The starter was part of the motor assembly and should be dated before the MOTOR was built.
The less common motors tend to streach further from the CAR build date. I understand those engine parts were built in lots, I also need a lot/Build date for a #365 starter for a 3 26 68 built 396. Sorry, I do not know the date you need either.

Nope. The starter was installed at the car assembly plant, not at the engine plant; it should be dated relative to the car's final assembly date.

John,
What engine pieces were assembled with the engine? Distributor, Alt, Carb, Manifolds? Any Idea on lot  dates?

Thanks for the help on the date.  Now all I have to do is find one.  Mine is dated after the car was assembled. If anyone has one with  a July or August 69 date I am interested in purchasing it.

I have found one with the following code:  1108418 9F17.  Is this acceptable for a September 1969 built car with a 325 hp 396?

What is your cars build date; JA, JB, JC or JD?

The reason I'm asking is because you are cutting it real close to that 3 month spread.

See the "Chevrolet Assembly, Engine Dress Line Operations" section in my CRG Report below for a description of the components added to the engine at Norwood and Van Nuys:
