68 Defroster Vent - Seals?
« on: March 03, 2012, 02:08:49 PM »
Was there any type of foam seal used between the Y-shaped defroster duct and the openings in the metal dash panel?

Nope - no seals.

New info:
I went back and looked at the pictures I took when my upper dash was removed, and there were definitely foam seals between defroster duct and the metal dash top.  They were attached to the defroster duct, and were a single strip at the back edge of each side (they didn't go all the way around the openings).

I was also looking at the 69 AIM online today and noticed that it calls out for seals between the defroster duct and the metal upper dash.  They are different for each side, which seems strange.

So, is anybody installing these seals?  If so, what are you using?

Nope - no seals.

Oops - my mistake - I mis-read the original post; thought the question was about seals between the defroster duct and the top of the heater case. As noted, there WERE foam seals between the top legs of the duct and the underside of the steel instrument panel.

No problem.
Any suggestions on what to use?  The remnants of the original stuff (which is now basically turning to dust) seems to be a very lightweight open-cell foam.  I guess I can see what the local hardware store or McMaster Carr has.

I used strip foam that you use to seal a door  on a house. You can get it 1/4" wide and sticky on one side. Got at the local hardware store.

Bob Harris at Camaro Specialties sells a complete kit with all the seals necessary to install the heater core, heater box, and the top defroster seals.
