Chad (OCTARD) very recently spoke with Ron Tredway, current owner of Jerry Thompson's old Owens-Corning Camaro. Ron recalled a conversation he had with Jerry Thompson about 5 years ago while both were having dinner together during the Monterey Historic Races weekend.

Ron recalled Jerry saying he was blasting down the back straight and then... "Hit the brakes and nothing. All sorts of cars in front of him so he moves [over], throws it sideways in effort to slow down, gets it straightened out in time to go into the trees. Banged off one or two with the passenger side and came to a halt.

He thought to himself, whew..that might not be too bad, when the tree right in front of him, slowly collapsed on the roof!

He said it was the first use of silicone brake fluid…I know of a few SF region SCCA guys who had the same problem happen to them!"

This certainly gives us a little more insight into what was causing the braking problems with the Owens-Corning cars at Mid-Ohio! Thanks to Chad and Ron for getting that information to us!

Some more insider information, this time from Doug Innes, former crew member for Jerry Titus and the T/G team.

"Jon, I was on Camaro site and 1st time I'd seen Mid-Ohio T/A photos. Thanks for bringing them to the forefront. In one photo your caption mentions Jerry T's long tail pipes. This was a remnant of quite a test program Jerry had going. He built a set of 180 degree headers for the gutless Pontiac and they were a nightmare to install but had a great sound to them. Nothing sounds as neat as a 180 degree exhaust.(incidentally in the early nineties a lot of Nascar teams and short track teams tried 180 Deg exhausts but they faded in popularity) We tested them at Willow Springs and Jerry didn't find any on-track power improvement with them so they got scrapped. What remained was the long tail pipe system exiting under the rear bumper. The theory was that a car sucking up behind you was going to overheat 'cause the competitor's radiator would be so close to Jerry's exhaust. The installation of these pipes was also cumbersome.
In truth I think Jerry turned a failure into a triumph as he loved agitating SCCA tech inspectors and he succeeded in getting them banned after that race. Gosh they did look nice while they lasted!"

Many thanks to Doug for sharing this with us.

This is a shot from the paddock looking across turn 15 to the infield. You can see the ambulance and tow truck in their staging positions for the race.

Some random Under-2-liter shots that Ron took that same weekend. The U-2 race was a separate event beginning in 1970.

Jerry Titus T/G Firebird photos from Mid-Ohio.  This car has the exhaust routed all the way out to the back of the car for this race.

Photos of the Jim Hall Chaparral Camaros at Mid-Ohio.  These cars arrived on Goodyear tires and switched to Firestone tires for the race.

Glad you have enjoyed them, Scott.  Here are some photos of the Penske team cars from the same race.
