Title: 1970 Mid-Ohio Trans-Am photos
Post by: Jon Mello on August 28, 2011, 05:26:15 PM
Once again, we have more racing photographs taken by Ron Lathrop but this time at the June 7th, 1970 Mid-Ohio Trans-Am near Lexington, Ohio. As mentioned previously, Ron was a freelance racing photographer dating back to 1963 and did work for Sports Car Graphic, Competition Press, Road & Track, as well as a number of karting magazines and even Rod & Custom. He also was in the U.S Air Force from 1965 - 69 and again from 1972 - 92. Mid-Ohio was a challenging course that had been on the Trans-Am schedule beginning in 1967. Ron lost the negatives to this race in the course of several moves over the last several decades so he has had to flat scan the images from his old proof sheets. Maybe not ideal but still of great benefit to us. Thanks again Ron for sharing these new photos with us!

The race weekend was extremely tough on man and machine alike. Ed Leslie's Camaro, George Follmer's Boss 302 and
Peter Revson's Javelin all blew engines and had to have them replaced before the race even started. Here you can see
the Revson Javelin jacked up with the oil lines undone, in preparation of removal of the blown powerplant.

Traco engine man Jim "Crabby" Travers, who flew out from L.A., has not had his mood lightened by the development.

The Owens-Corning Camaro team (semi trailer in the background) would have the weekend from hell. The windshield of the #4 Jerry Thompson car
was smashed by a loose tire inside the trailer on the trip down. He then went out after getting that repaired and lost his brakes on the back straight
(at 145mph!), demolishing his car. Amazingly, Jerry was unhurt. Tony DeLorenzo then took his car out and had the same thing happen in the same spot.

Here, the Owens-Corning crew have removed the heavily damaged front fender from DeLorenzo's car in an attempt to get
the car in good enough shape to enter the race. 200 Owens-Corning execs came down to the race only to see this happen.

Four hours of repairs, including much hammer wielding on this front fender, got his car to the grid on time.

Jerry Titus broke his windshield during practice and then had a rock take out his radiator, fan and pulleys. Must have been a huge rock!

A cast of some of the usual suspects...

Peter Revson in the #9 Javelin. He would have the shortest weekend of anybody not named Jerry Thompson, as his faulty transmission allowed him
only one practice lap, his first engine blew, and he only lasted a half a lap in the race before the electrical system died, mercifully ending his day.

'67/68 season. The 16th '67 Z-28 built, it was an original Marina Blue car with RS equipment. Lewis repainted the car sky blue for the '70 season.

Swede Savage's lead only lasted a couple of laps before he blew his engine, which ended the race for him.

Chad (OCTARD) very recently spoke with Ron Tredway, current owner of Jerry Thompson's old Owens-Corning Camaro. Ron recalled a conversation he had with Jerry Thompson about 5 years ago while both were having dinner together during the Monterey Historic Races weekend.

Ron recalled Jerry saying he was blasting down the back straight and then... "Hit the brakes and nothing. All sorts of cars in front of him so he moves [over], throws it sideways in effort to slow down, gets it straightened out in time to go into the trees. Banged off one or two with the passenger side and came to a halt.

He thought to himself, whew..that might not be too bad, when the tree right in front of him, slowly collapsed on the roof!

He said it was the first use of silicone brake fluid…I know of a few SF region SCCA guys who had the same problem happen to them!"

This certainly gives us a little more insight into what was causing the braking problems with the Owens-Corning cars at Mid-Ohio! Thanks to Chad and Ron for getting that information to us!

Some more insider information, this time from Doug Innes, former crew member for Jerry Titus and the T/G team.

"Jon, I was on Camaro site and 1st time I'd seen Mid-Ohio T/A photos. Thanks for bringing them to the forefront. In one photo your caption mentions Jerry T's long tail pipes. This was a remnant of quite a test program Jerry had going. He built a set of 180 degree headers for the gutless Pontiac and they were a nightmare to install but had a great sound to them. Nothing sounds as neat as a 180 degree exhaust.(incidentally in the early nineties a lot of Nascar teams and short track teams tried 180 Deg exhausts but they faded in popularity) We tested them at Willow Springs and Jerry didn't find any on-track power improvement with them so they got scrapped. What remained was the long tail pipe system exiting under the rear bumper. The theory was that a car sucking up behind you was going to overheat 'cause the competitor's radiator would be so close to Jerry's exhaust. The installation of these pipes was also cumbersome.
In truth I think Jerry turned a failure into a triumph as he loved agitating SCCA tech inspectors and he succeeded in getting them banned after that race. Gosh they did look nice while they lasted!"

Many thanks to Doug for sharing this with us.
