Mike, the car always had the AS painted on the door whether it race Trans-Am or A/Sedan races.  This is the only photo that I have ever seen where this car was using the ZL2 hood. I think it may have been taken at the '69 Santa Barbara road races but don't know that for a fact.

Here is a neat shot of a 1970 Penske Sunoco Javelin Trans Am race car from the 1970 Chicago Auto Show which took place between February 21st and March 1st 1970.  Does anyone know if this is the car that participated in the 24 hours of Daytona a few weeks earlier or is it is just a show car?  It doesn't seem to have the same wheels that were on it during the 24 hours of Daytona nor does it have the extra road lights across the bumper or the lights that illuminated the side numbers at night.  It also is displaying #6 instead of the #0 run at Daytona, but these are things that could have been altered after the race in order to make it perfect for the show and be more representative of the way the car would look in the months ahead during the Trans Am season.  If this isn't the Daytona car or just a show car, does anybody know if this particular car ran any Trans Am races?

I live in Chicago and go to the Auto Show every year and I have seen several manufacturers display cars that actually participated in the 24 hours of Daytona just a few weeks before, so I was interested in finding out the history behind this car.  Thanks for any info provided.

You can find the picture here: http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/history/1970/

The show car doesn't have widened fenders either. The body looks stock. I'm sure that's just a show car.

Here is a cool color photo taken by John Losee during the 1967 Daytona 24 hour Continental on February 4/5, 1967.  In it you can see the 1967 Penske Camaro of Mark Donohue sandwiched by a Ford GT40 and the Ferrari 365 P2/3 of David Piper just as they head off the main straight past pit-out.  See this picture and several others taken during the race here: http://www.thevrl.com/photo/albums/daytona-24-hours-1967-1?test-locale=&exposeKeys=&xg_pw=&xgsi=&id=1465153%3AAlbum%3A223088&groupId=&groupUrl=&xgi=&commentPage=&page=1

Sorry if this is a repost.  I don't recall seeing it before.

I know that the 1970 Sebring 12 Hours wasn't a Trans Am race but I couldn't resist posting this cool picture of the #43 1969 Camaro of John Tremblay and Bill McDill in pit lane with the hood up.  It is part of the Dave Friedman Collection at The Henry Ford.  A larger and clearer version can be seen here: http://thehenryford.artehouse.com/perl/magnify_popup.pl?imageID=153393&staticImage=C&ckon=image&alt=0

Scott, Mark Donohue was actually driving one of the Ford GT MkIIs during the Daytona 24-Hour race so
Penske had George Wintersteen, Joe Welch and Bobby Brown signed up to drive the Camaro in that event.

Here's a picture of Canadian Laurie Craig's black '67 RS Z-28. This was taken at the 6-25-67 Westwood, BC races.
Laurie entered this car in the Kent 300 Trans-Am race later that year. The current whereabouts of the car are not
known but I do have the VIN information so it can be verified if it ever does show up.

Laurie Craig's racing bio can be seen at this link: http://www.gvmps.org/inductees/laurie_craig.htm

Phil Dauphinee's website at http://public.fotki.com/phildaupho/strata_painting_options/laurie-craig-67-cam/
has some really neat historical photos of Laurie's car plus a cool scale model of the car that he built. When I
spoke with Laurie on the phone, he told me they stopped the train that was carrying the Z-28 from the Norwood
plant to the dealership so they could get a good look at the car. It was an early Z but not the first one exported
to Canada as claimed in the bio.
