Impossible to document?
« on: May 06, 2006, 04:17:41 PM »
I have a car that to my knowledge cannot be proven as to what it is. I would appreciate any advice. I am not in the market to sell it but down the road it could make a differance.
I purchased it in 1975 at that time I didn't know what a DZ motor was.
The body tag is dated 12C Van Neys built.
The block is a CE short block cast A69 I decked it at rebuild so CE# is gone, heads, dist, alternator, all match production date of car.
Trans has VIN and is correct.
Rear is 12 bolt 4.10 posi and is date correct.
I restored the car in the late 70's early 80's all NOS parts. Only 76000 miles but I wanted it better.
The paint code is - - the car is garnet red with white stripes. I have the original hood and deck lid in original paint.
I have no doubt as to what the car is, I have knowledge of it back to 1970. And we didn't even think of building clones then.
Why when you could buy a real one for 2 to 3 grand!
I would appreciate any ideas
                            Thanks Pat

Van Nuys built 69s [L VIN] often have a Broadcast Sheet taped to the top of the fuel tank.

Check it out.

I did check that William, I  replaced the tank when I rebuilt the car. I have the old tank and it's not on it. It is possible that I could have disgarded it when I took the car apart in 76. There was not alot of research being done back then I would have had no idea what it was. I guess I should mention that the car is a Z-28 didn't state that in the first post, I need to proof read my posts more!
                           Thanks Pat

Many if not most surviving musclecars do not have original paperwork. Mine did not and it never bothered me.

Working the other angle I acquired a lot of '60s paperwork from a Chevrolet dealer, only a few of the cars seem to have survived.

The paint is interesting. This is the 2nd Z/28 I know of with - - paint due to
non-standard stripe color, the other being Le Mans blue with black stripes.

Even if you had the OE window sticker or invoice all it would state is "special paint".

The suggestion to try GM Canada is an excellent one. The first title in Washington state was 12/12/69, the car was one year old by then, it may started life up north. I know I've seen the Canadian info on the site before but does someone have it handy?
                  Thanks Pat

Don't quote me - but I seem to recall from a conversation from someone - either G M Vintage Services or elsewhere - that almost all Canadian sold/documented cars were ones made and shipped from the Norwood facility... - Randy

Randy,
That is correct. So this car could not have been sold originally in Canada.

Under the past history question:

http://www.camaros.org/geninfo.shtml#InfoSources

The above link takes you to the following:

Q: How can I find out about the past history of my car?

A: If your vehicle was originally sold in Canada, you can request a vehicle report from GM Canada. Call the GM Canada Customer Communications Centre at 800.263.3777 (toll-free within Canada) and ask for Vintage Vehicle Services (VVS). Direct contact information for VVS is below. For a nominal fee ($45CDN as of Nov 1999) you will receive basic information from the original computerized records such as the option by RPO number, date of shipment, and the Canadian dealer number.

GM Canada Vintage Vehicle Services
1908 Colonel Sam Drive
Oshawa, ONT L1H 8P7 Canada
888.467.6853 (toll-free and only from within Canada)
905.644.4060 or 905.644.3387 (outside Canada)
905.644.5436 fax
Office hours: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-5:00pm Eastern.

The toll free number inside Canada is still correct , however, there apparently is now only one number for calling outside of Canada and it is:  905.440.7697.  The fax number has also changed.  It is 905.440.7644.
