Never quite as simple as it first appears.

John - as usual your explanations are thourough, concise, and leave little or no room for debate. Just the way we like it. Thanks!

Jimmy - I'd have to agree!

Here's a picture of a friend of mine's 69 Z/28 in 1971. Ordered with Black stripes and came in - -  paint delete car on the cowl tag. I like because it was an early Flat Hood no Spoiler car. When he sold it in 1979 it had 12,000 milles on it.

Careful, you might get hosed if you say Paint Delete. Its called Special Paint. ;) Nice car! Do you know what color that is? Maybe Windward Blue Met? Its the only blue in '69 offered as a special order paint.

Winward blue was a Pontiac color. 51, 53, 55, and 71 were all Camaro colors. Maybe dusk?

The rear stripes look like they touch the back window.

Yup - that's why I said 87...Mike stated it's a "Special Paint" Z. Its the only blue left other than 80 that isn't a Camaro color. And, it certainly isn't 80.

I was going to say the same thing about the stripe. Appears to be burried under the rear window molding. Mike, would it be too much trouble to blow up that part of the pic and post?

Well once you have a 1st gen...you are hooked..so in the spring of 1979 I bought my second 69...lucked out and bought an SS...worked on it all spring..and in June I brought her out...350/300...4 speed/with console(took console out[did save and still have]so the girls could sit next to ya)..put shag carpet in..steering wheel was cracked(put small wheel in[did not save steering wheel{young and dumb}]).....Drove the car every night..parked for the winter..Drove all summer long in 1980 and parked the car in the Fall and she still sits stored(thought I was too old to be cruising for girls) I hope to pull her out one of these days...she looks just like this picture before I parked her...41 years she has been waiting for me to grow up

Thanks Mike. Am I correct to assume it was a special paint Z? If so, do you know what the Z's color was before it was painted lemans blue?

No special paint. Only the stripe color was changed on the car from White to Black.  The car came with the - - Cowl Tag when he took delivery because of the change. This is the best I could do. Maybe someone else can work with the pic. The stripes look like the one on the Dusk Blue car in post 11 to me

I talked to my friend the past weekend and he gave me a copy of the window sticker for his car. I knew he had it.

That car has some cool things going for it (4.10's, rear antenna). Does special paint mean just that?

The car was ordered Lemans Blue with Black stripes instead of the std White stripes. Only the stripe color was changed.
