I have reviewed John and Duke's valve adjustment procedure, and it looks pretty straight forward. However, I am not sure if the cam is a 30-30 / original. I assume I should NOT use this procedure if I do not know the cam specs.  Is there a "generic" lash adjustment/clearance that I should use? Thoughts?

If the running method is my only or best choice, can the experts chime in and let me know what to listen for? Is it the same overall procedure as hydraulic valve adjustment?

When we did my friends '69 Z-28 DZ302 we attempted the J&D's procedure. Well, we figured out pretty quickly that we did not have the original cam in their when we double checked the lash after we set them. What we ended up doing was going 295 on the intake and 28 on the exhaust (mostly because of the heat generated in the exhaust valve will cause expansion). Car runs like a raped ape for now and we have had no trouble with the performance. But at least I know what to get him for X-Mas now.

I dislike trying to set the valve lash while the car is running.

Here is a way to do it regardless of camshaft specs. I would never attempt to adjust a solid lifter camshaft with the engine running, but that's just me.

VALVE ADJUSTMENT:
1. ROTATE ENGINE UNTIL EXHAUST
ROCKER BEGINS TO OPEN EXHAUST VALVE.
SET INTAKE LASH TO THE DESIRED SPEC.
2. ROTATE ENGINE UNTIL INTAKE ROCKER
BEGINS TO RETURN FROM ITS FULL LIFT
POSITION. SET EXHAUST LASH TO SPEC.
3. REPEAT FOR THE REMAINING SEVEN
CYLINDERS FOLLOWING THE 18436572
FIRING ORDER.
