The rally wheels are semi-gloss black except for the argent silver outer face; they were dip-primed black, then the face was sprayed argent silver. The back side of the wheel and the portion under the tire should be black, not gray; service replacement rally wheels were furnished already painted gray.

Krylon makes a perfect silver paint that is identical to the original GM argent silver wheels.  Called dull aluminum, I don't recall the # off the top of my head but it should be easy to find.  That is the correct name of the color.

I'm getting ready to repaint the backs of my YJs and picked up a kand of dull aluminum Kylon in case I wanted to repaint the front of any, although the trim ring and center cap cover all any scratches on the front anyway.  I have one service wheel that appears to be original so I shot a small spot on the back side (still all silver and matches the front side) with the Krylon and it appears to be just a tad more silver than the color on the wheel which as just a hint more of a copper / gold hue to it than the Krylon dull silver.  Not sure if Krylon has changed their paint or if there's a patina that has developed in the color of the service wheel.  The difference is subtle but you can see it when sprayed on top of the original color.  Thinking I may get a can of Argent silver to try instead.   I hate to not paint the front on these since I have them off and without tires on them now.  Do you think the rattle can of Argent silver any more durable than Krylon?   I know the trim rings are going to scratch any paint I put on them as weill the center cap but would like to keep it to a minimum.  Thoughts?

Steve, There is very little difference in aerosol paint durability unless it's dime store junk. Although it does not apply to your silver, SEM is better than most. But a rattle can nonetheless. Catylized paint is the only way to achieve a dramatic durability increase over rattle can paint.

Thanks, I thought that would be the case, but thought I would ask.  I'm going the spray bomb route this time - ordered a can of Eastwood Argent Silver, will post back when it shows up on how it matches the origional color, hopefully closer.

FWIW's I have 3 of the original 9/20 dated AD Ralley's on my 10D early car. It was parked in 1973 with 50k miles, they were light grey on the backs with silver over spray.
The color is an exact match to the back of the Pontiac Ralley II's (Dove Grey)

I bought another 9/20 dated AD wheel from Camaro Specialties, it was also unrestored and it also had a light grey back.

The wheels were dipped in a petroleum based chassis or recondtioning black and then the front face was sprayed with argent silver.  the black dip paint is.was not very durable and does not last...  re color it is a semi-gloss black so simulate it as you like.

Mine had 3 wheels back side black, and 1 side back was just like the front.  The black looked to be the original coating as did the silver, I assume the Silver back was a service wheel.  My spare was was redone with a powder coating.  The powder coated one has more tiny specks of flake like sparkle to it then the ones that I redid with a spray bomb Argent Silver from Eastwood.  The powder coating also has a tad goldish hue noticable only really when you put it next to the ones repainted with the spraybomb.  The powder coated one also matches the one that was painted silver on the backside in color.   Interesting color variation, not sure which of the two silvers is correct, but I can tell you for sure, the color and sparkle on the powder coated one is definitely the best looking of the set I have.   I'd take a photo and share it but doubt the subtle difference would show up on camera.

Actually, the factory (plant) black primer wasn't petroleum-based, and was quite durable; it was baked for 45 minutes at 325*F; after the outer face was painted with wheel enamel, it was baked again for 30 minutes at 275*F. Photo below shows one of my untouched original '69 "YH" rally wheels; if you look closely, you can see the slight shadows of argent silver overspray through the "windows" from the front side.

JohnZ,
I acknowledge your much better information for 1969; my 'petroleum based' reconditioning/chassis black response was based on what Chevrolet used on the backside of wheels in the mid 50's, so perhaps Chevy/Kelsey changed their process in those intervening years.  Regarding the 'durability' of the '69 black, there is very little 'black' left on the back side of my wheels, even though the car hasn't moved from the garage in 31 yrs...
