Chambered Exhaust
« on: August 21, 2020, 02:43:21 AM »
Can anyone recommend where to get chambered exhaust for a 1969?  Doesn’t need to be show quality but don’t want to buy junk either

Allen's Exhaust (Indiana) also sells (or did) an aluminized chambered exhaust system for camaros and other cars...

Gardener is the closest to the original, but pricey. D&R makes a nice version that is much more affordable, worth considering.

X2 on Gardner Exhaust! Eric Gardner is a great guy & their product is the best. I’ve installed about 15 of their systems ( not chambered though) and the fit & finish is second to none.

Personally I hate chambered exhaust, I like the deep tone better. I think John Z has said the chambered system actually lost about 7 hp. FWIW

It is a lot more than 7 hp. ZL1 dyno test picked up 79 hp with the chambered removed.

That would be correct on 'deep breathing' semi-race engines like ZL-1/L88s, Hemis and Boss 429s. Concerning 'regular' performance engines, I can see around the 7-15 HP mark. I do like the chambered exhausts. I often heard the old timers say "It really crackled when you fired it up".

I like the sound of them myself. Plus they have an exotic vibe to them. I only have had exposure to originals and Gardner. Hard to beat Gardner's quality. Aluminized pipes will sound a little less tinny so that can help you tune in the sound your after.

The original chambered system, in reality all of the systems sounded different, they were made from laminated pipe (double wall). The Chevrolet systems, at least the hi perf systems had head pipes, and exhaust pipes prior to the mufflers made of doublewall or laminated pipe. It results in a less tinny or tinging sound the double wall acts as a dampener giving a deeper sound.

Just installed one from Allens.

It fit, but it was a PITA.

The pipes that go over the axle are supposed to be welded together, Allens wasn't - which caused the majority of the fitment issues (including the right side head pipe was too short by three inches).

It sounds great, but in the end, I should have gone for the system from Gardner.

I'm just a cheap-ass.

Good luck!!!

I considered Allen’s due to the price difference but decided Gardner’s was the way to go.

This old thread mentions a horse power decrease with the chambered exhaust system between 7-15 HP, does anyone know if the later style exhaust with resonators vs. the earlier style without resonators have a difference in HP? I am ordering parts for my late August '69 Z which would have had resonators and would like to maximize the engine output since I don't plan on having my car judged for total originality I am wondering which system would maximize the HP output.

I believe Flowmaster (and others) make a nice 'replacement' system. Might be a consideration to check it out.

John Z told me once that the chambered exhaust cost 7 hp over the non-resonator single muffler (dual in dual out) system.   I'm sure the resonator is more 'lossy' than without the resonators.

That said, I'm in the same boat as you.. mid Sept '69 car, so my will get the resonators when I get it back together.
