Caveat Emptor...another repro tag?
« on: September 30, 2019, 02:02:57 PM »
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-Chevrolet-Camaro-Z28/202789623112?hash=item2f37341548:g:8B8AAOSwOxJdkRuc&vxp=mtr

There is no pic of the body tag [or anything else of importance] but seller lists the data:

71 71 713 05A X33D80

The car is clearly Dusk blue. However, if the other data is accurate it is a repro body tag.

I have seen another fresh paint Dusk Blue 69 with a 71 paint code and the owner swore it was the correct LeMans Blue. I didn't argue, but wonder if there is a paint code out there mislabeled or just coincidence?

You know, could have used dark grey primer instead of the light grey, LeMans is a fairly transparent color. I think it looks close to Dusk, though. Somebody messed up -

There is a pic of the trim tag now, and actually the trim tag was the only thing that looked like it may be legit, but after further scrutiny, (and my friend Jacks input) it is in fact a fake tag. Every stamp shown in the pics looked like garbage. Trans was the worst for me, you could actually still see where they cleaned it up and restamped both areas. Of course you have that many parts re-stamped the whole car comes into question including the tags. Too bad it looks nice in the pics. Perfect bait for a buyer that doesn't know any better

William I assumed you had looked at the VIN vs the build date initially, and that is how you concluded the firewall tag was wrong. ( I know different now) if we are just focused on the build date to VIN, 05A would be correct according to Jerrys book. BUT he states he could be off about 1000 cars, so it sounds like more of a approximation.

I found this site,
http://www.chevy-camaro.com/faq/chevy-camaro-faq-VIN-build-dates.shtm

and according to it, this car looks like it would have been a last week of April car?

Thoughts about VIN to build date and what that website shows vs Jerry's book?

Tag looks ok to me.  But what do I know.  Diff, trans and engine stamps don't though.

Exactly!   I'm fairly certain that the 'creator' of the site posted by Bullitt is someone I know.  He's 'created' several sites for automobile enthusiasts, and I'm certain that he 'borrowed' (or stole?) information from sites like CRG to do his sites.   He is interested in one thing ($$ Making $$ from the users of the sites) .   He fills them up with advertisements to the point of aggravation to the users, and when he can SELL the site he will.   Note:  The way you SELL such sites is based on your advertising revenue! ..  Oh yeah, he also 'sold' memberships to dedicated users of his sites (annual dues) and deserted them when he sold out.   I try to make a point to stay away from such sites!

Whereas CRG is the BEST source of 1st generation Camaro information... and the creators/founders do it for the cars and the enthusiasts (not the $$)... at least that's my opinion!  :)

sorry, I went through a couple of links on research and did not run across it here.  That link was the first to appear on a google search.

Anyways while 2 people responded that I missed the CRG link, neither addressed my question. It appears this car does not line up for a 05A with the VIN, or are there cases at the end of month where a car could have gotten held up? (does the vin fit with this build date?)

My info shows it lines up with cars 6367XX  that have 04C or 04L Tags. But I am seeing 05A cars starting in the 6375XX range. So only about 800 Vin's apart. That's less than one day's production of 912 per day, correct? Looks OK to me.

N636709 could be an 05A body tag date. When the build order for the body was released at Fisher, the body tag was punched. Somewhere in the late April/early May time frame, a number of tags were stamped 04L. No idea why; maybe there was a reason. I believe they were all done at the same time; then the date revised to 05A. Having worked as a production planner, it is customary to have a queue of released orders to ensure uninterrupted production. Within the queue, some orders have higher priority. No question orders with 05A dates were released from the queue and produced prior to 04L orders.

As completed body assemblies were received at the body bank at Chevrolet final assembly, the last 6 digits of the VIN were assigned. Bodies were then assigned to one of 6 lines in the bank, based on assembly labor. Cars were not built in VIN order. Entirely possible some early N637xxx VINs were final-assembled prior to later N636xxx VINs.

Body tag date is at best, a rough approximation of final assembly. ZL1s #3-#39 have 02D tag dates; none of them were final-assembled in February. Our ’67 Z/28 project has an 06E tag date. The original engine is V0706MO. Car was final-assembled on or about July 12, 1967.
