Original ignition coils
« on: August 02, 2018, 03:17:45 AM »
Lots of questions on what ignition coil is original. An often changed part and the original configurations are poorly documented in manuals.
One thing to know - the coil and bracket were shipped as an assembly to the assembly plant. What is a bit different is the last three digits of the assembly part # were the numbers embossed into the coil. The various brackets changed the angle /location of the coil for clearance.
Also the BR embossed on the coil went to B-R for 69 (the drawing change was dated 9/12/68)

What I know from the AIMs and broadcast sheets and car data.
67-69 L6: 1115208

67 V8: 1115267 used on many applications including LF7(base 327), L35, and L78.
Appears 270 and another coil (290??) were used on SS350 and L30 cars. It looks like the wiring harness and ignition resistance wire changed and so it may be an early vs late thing.

68 V8: 1115293 - all engines

69 V8: 1115293 - used on all engines except below
           1115298 - Z28
1115270 - Z28 and L48 with cowl hood  (but not BB with cowl hood)
           1115210 - ZL1 TI units

After pulling this together, the biggest question is the coil for the 67 L30 and L48 cars.
And the differences between the brackets.

I believe most (maybe all?) were made by Delco-Remy.

You may see BR or B-R and 12V or 12-V on them, depending on the year.

I am not aware of what the BR or B-R stands for.

BR is believed to be for Ballast Resistor.

BR is believed to be for Ballast Resistor.
Kurt
so the BR would indicate that the resistance wire or a ballast resistor must be used?

What finish black is correct? Should they be 30/60 or gloss?

Thanks,

I am certain they are full gloss (not sure what the % was considered back then) based on the originals I have.

These photos are of my original 208 coil. Looks like semi-gloss. May have been shinier when new. Hope this helps. Joe.

298 for a 68 Z28
For a 68, that's in conflict with other cars have. They used 293's.

So did the 69 Z28 use a different coil, or is it the coil/bracket that makes it a different part no.?

My survivor 68 Z28 has a 298 coil, which is also used on 69 Z28 with the flat hood.

The docs are clear, one coil for 68 V8. But Danny's car is a 298. Several others are 293.
I don't have a single Chassis Broadcast sheet for a 68 Z which would tell us something.
Wonder what's on Chick's and Steve's cars.
