67 low fuel light?
« on: January 29, 2007, 08:07:58 PM »

???I could not find a RPO code in 67 for a low fuel warning light. Was this option available in 67?  If so, where would it appear? On the dash or in the gauge package? Was it just a warning light or did it say Low Fuel? Reason I ask, I am in the process of installing a new underdash harness in my 67 Camaro. I have the gauge package on the floor console and it is a automatic. There is a connection I can't find where its goes from the harness. I have all the dash hooked up, the glove box light, ash tray light , cigarette lighter etc etc. Or is this there in case some one has it and instead of having to buy a special harness it is included in the harness.? I bought the harness through Rick's First Gen. Pretty simple to install and really cleans up the underdash.

dab,

For 67-69 the low fuel warning light came as part of the Special Instruments (U17) option. Since the fuel gauge was "so hard to see", Chevrolet put a "Low Fuel" indicator inside the speedometer (lower left side) that would flash on and off when the fuel level became lower than (approximately) 1 or 2 gallons. The extra connection you have is probably the low fuel warning "sender". It looks kind of like a light bulb connector (see the picture). Is this what you're talking about? (NOTE: The picture is from a 68/69 gauge cluster, but the "sender" is the same for 67.)

Hi Ed -

Beautiful photo! I'm curious, why is the fuel warning sender taped to the bottom of the gauge cluster housing instead of being mounted in the hole between the fuel and oil pressure gauges?  Mine is mounted in the hole. Just curious, that's all.

Paul,

Mine is also "mounted". I got this picture somewhere (off of ebay ?) a few years ago, and saved it because of the great picture quality, but have no idea why it's not "mounted". I don't think it really needs to be since the black wire is ground, and it's hooked up correctly.

Hi Ed -

I wasn't concerned with it being grounded (I could see it was). I was thinking more about the air circulation in regards to keeping electronic parts cool  8). I know it doesn't get that "hot" inside the console, but my experience is that if you can keep electronic parts cool you will increase thier life span. I've changed more than my share of electronic ignition modules, mass air flow sensors, crankshaft sensors, etc. that would only fail when they got hot. I just was thinking that aluminum tape is some pretty heavy duty stuff (heat retention wise) and was wondering if you Camaro experts knew of some trick? Thanks!

Ed thats my guage cluster from my 69RS, it was never on ebay but my guess is you grabbed it for reference from Team Camaro. Glad it helps folks  out. I was slamming the console together to get to a car show that year so I just taped it in there and like so many projects, never got back to it :)

Ah ha!!! Thanks Jim. Most of the time I never remember where I get these things from. Nice to give credit where credit is due this time.

When the Fuel light comes on, does it flash on and off or remain "solid"?
I have the module but am a little way off fitting it..

Mine comes on occasionally when it's to about 1/4 tank if you go around a corner or up and down hills.  It comes on and off as the fuel sloshes around when it's low.  When it gets really low, it stays on.
