Smog pump fan, white
« on: December 29, 2016, 04:05:07 PM »
Who makes the closest to original reproduction white smog pump fan. The Arizona heat has dried mine out & it's like powder. Thank you, Joe

Well, since there's only one source (China), it really doesn't matter where you get it from. I see them range in price from $70 to $110, so just go with the cheapest you can find (usually ebay).

I can't believe they don't mold them in the correct off-white color. Same with the booster connector.

Originals show up on ebay now and then. I have some laying around somewhere too....

Here's what Kurt is referring to. What came off my car on the right. Had this car 35 years. The one on the pump is from thepartsplace.

Kurt; for your DB. My pump number is 20391S. I didn't have this number when I sent you the list (9N677163)....Joe

Here's a picture Joe Lucia from the NCRS sent me a few months back. (If you don't know that name, like our JohnZ (John Hinckley), he's VERY respected in the Corvette community)

It's a 1968 NOS pump dated 2568 (256th day of 1968, or September 12). Note how smooth the aluminum housing is, the extrusion marks and the color of the fan. It's not "WHITE white", but it's not "yellow" either. More of an off white or maybe an egg shell white like Kurt stated above. After time, the age of the plastic and the extreme under hood temperatures make them yellow, but that's not how they started out. Also note that original fans are two piece like Joe shows in his picture above. Repops are one piece.

By the way, Joe (Lucia) has a TON of NOS C1, C2 and C3 Corvette parts, but unfortunately, none are for sale. If they were, he'd be a bizillionaire!

I guess I better rethink discarding the original. I thought it was broke. Thank you, Joe

I know this thread is over a year old, but am wondering how best to attempt removing the fan from my smog pump to clean it up. Don't want to break the aged plastic...... from Kurt's picture above, it looks as though the shaft hub is splined to grip the fan? All advice/tips much appreciated!

I would like to know too.  And any help in disassembling the pump it self.  Taking the bolts off do nothing, still frozen and locked together tighter then... well you know.

I used a hack saw blade (I ground off the teeth) and was able to get it in between the housing and the fan and SLOWLY pulled it free. Take your time and go in as close as you can to the hub, then twist the blade so it pops the fan loose. You'll probably have to go round and round several times before it'll come lose. But be careful. After 50 years they get VERY brittle and can break VERY easily!

Read THIS and THIS.

When it comes time for blocking the AIR tubes, I tapped clevis pins inside the tubes. If you remove the seat inside the exhaust manifold, the head of the clevis pin makes as the new seat & sits at the correct height. Mine have been in there for 80k miles now. Find a tight fitting BB to go in the hose for the diverter. Not too big or it will look like a snake just had it's lunch....Joe
