Washer/Wiper Cog
« on: July 27, 2016, 01:19:31 AM »
So I needed to replace both my wiper motor and washer pump ('67) because the previous owner had Frankensteined a motor from what I think was a 60's truck and a pump that looked like a Jarvik 7 (some of you may remember what that was)  to the firewall. After attaching both aftermarket parts - I went to fit from the old wiper motor what I'll call the "washer cog"  - its a 4 pointed "star" which is 9/16 thick and is 1-1/8 tip to tip. Although it fits the shaft perfectly - it seems a little long and the washer pump housing does not fit well over it (like it would bind if activated). Looking to see if anyone can confirm the correct dimensions?  Thanks - Chris

I measured the gear on my '67 and it is the same dimensions as yours in width (1 1/8") and thickness.
Have you rotated the gear so that it can slide into the pump housing easily?

Thanks for the confirmation Mike. I'll try repositioning the pump and see if that works now that I know that cog looking part is the right size.

Hi Chris,

Just curious if you were able to get the pump body on.

Mike - sorry for the late reply. Life always getting in the way.
Still struggling with that gear. I have it pushed all the way down - but there is a shoulder on the shaft that's keeping it from going on far enough and its hitting the casing on the back of the pump. Its a rebuilt wiper motor so now I'm wondering if the shaft was not set correctly?

Hmmmm.....let me measure the gear depth on mine and let you know later today. The washer is off the car still so it's easy to do.

Here is a closeup of the gear mounted. The ruler increments are in 1/16". Measuring from the mounting surface the set depth looks to be 1/4" to the gear end. Then starting at the 1/2" mark to 3/4" is the thickness of the star tooth.
Let me know if you need any more measurements or pictures. This assembly is off the car during the restoration.

Yep - the issue appears to be the total thickness with the gear on. Yours is at 3/4 and I'm at 7/8 (just the gear at 1/4 thick is spot on so its not the gear) Shaft is sticking out too far. Now what to do?

I haven't had the star gear off so I'm not familiar how the shaft looks. If the star gear depth is set by the star gear itself then would it be possible to shave 2/16" off the shaft end thereby allowing the gear to sit lower?

Reducing the overall length of the shaft I don't think will work. The gear is down as far as it will go b/c of the machining to make 2 flat sides so the gear does not spin (i.e. so the gear turns with the shaft). Not knowing the internals of the wiper motor - I think it will need to be pressed in 1/8 of an inch? Electrical part so I can't return it  >:(

How does that gear come off? I can try to remove mine and measure the exposed shaft length.

Mine just pulls right off. No set screw or anything. The way it's designed once the pump is attached I don't think there's any chance it could come off the shaft.

The gear doesn't resemble what I have always worked with. Is it a cast metal gear ? All mine are thinner nylon gears, white, and a lot closer to the gear case when installed.

I'll get a pic later this morning -

At least in 67 a metal gear was used. I have a couple of spare '67 motors and they all have metal gears.
Let me try to remove mine and I'll get measurements.
