To me, and maybe it's just me (old and confused), the 1969 assembly manual is confusing. Under N10, A1 shows no resonators, then A2 and A3 picture resonators. Did my 11D 350 SS-RS convertible (which probably came off the line around Dec 6, 1968) originally have resonators or not? All 4 original hangers were intact, but that doesn't tell me what system it had.  Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Would have sold for $215 if I didn't try to be funny.

Sorry to any CRG guys for costing them more money on this one.... :P

Hopefully they went to a good car, I will have to live with my crooked aftermarket set for a while longer, or until Uncle Bentley is ready to

cut his loose....hahaha

That's a reference drawing and depicts a '67-'68 with deep-tone dual exhaust. The deep-tone dual exhaust option for '67-'68 eliminated the resonators. Just a poor choice for the '69 Assembly manual. The same drawing in the '67 & '68 manual shows resonators. The standard production N10 dual exhaust system for all three years had resonators.

ZL1 #3 was tested when new by High Performance Cars magazine. The under chassis photos show an N10 system with resonators.

Was there a test of any of the other ZL-1 cars without the resonators or with the chambered exhaust, to compare performance wise?

Scroll down to the "How much real power" window. Shows what chambered exhaust did to power output.

Good link, but may not tell the whole story of just the exhaust.

A ZL1 is an extreme example. I'm sure the cam was designed for open headers. But it is all relative. Chambered was a poor, highly restrictive system. People that have compared both on a chassis dyno claim it was worse than the standard N10 system. Both used small tubing and had too many bends.

Modern aftermarket performance exhaust systems have almost no power loss.

I must be getting older.......I recently put stock mufflers back on my Harley and ......I want resonators back on my exhaust.
If I can only find them!

William, can you tell by the tail pipes if this car had NC8? Car build date 09D 1968 L-78

Can't tell by the tailpipes; they were very similar. In production the RH pipe was welded to the muffler, whatever it was. The LH pipes had different part numbers.

Z/28, L34 & L78 Camaro SS included NC8 exhaust as standard equipment until the first recall notice November 1968. At that time in production L34 & L78 reverted to the standard N10 muffler/resonator system. Z/28s received an interim system w/o resonators. NC8 became optional. As of April, N10 became the standard Z/28 system. Later in May, Chevy sent a letter to dealers informing them chromed tailpipes would now be included on all cars built with N10 and the msrp increased accordingly. NC8 was dropped as an option at that time.

So, an L78 built September '68 would have had NC8. Really like the P06 trim rings!

FWIW No SS 350's would have had chambered pipes it was only available with the Big Block's or Z28's.

I know the April date is thrown around often however this is an ACTUAL recall letter for BOTH exhaust systems sent out in August of 1969.
