1967 Camaro kmh Speedometer
« on: August 27, 2015, 05:31:56 PM »
Hello! My name is Guenther and in a few weeks I will be an happy owner of a 1967 Camaro RS/SS 350  8). I bought it from an US dealer and now it will be shipped to Austria/Europe.
I need to do some modifications to meet the local standards. One thing is that we need to have a speedometer with km/h. I dont want to put stickers on it and I have heard rumors that there have been original speedometers with km/h instead of miles.
I would be happy to hear where I can find one (or how to modify it) - but it must be an original and no aftermarket product  :-\

xdrive,
Good luck with that, there are some export owners on this site that may be able to point you in the right direction. if not, are the stickers removeable/fall off? if they happen to fall off after you get cleared
is there a regular inspection that will cause you problems? I only look at a speedometer when I know I'm going too fast.

Hi Victor,
thanks for the reply! I want to do it original so the stickers are the last option. I hope someone can help me to find a source. And yes, we have a regular inspection every 2 years on the car - that make things not easier...

Could you stick the stickers onto a removable film? (like they sell in baby stores to provide tinted window shade) Did you enter your VIN # to see what pops up, if anything on this site?
   We love pictures.

I would get two speedometers and convert one to kmh and leave the stock one original.  If you like, I have a 67-68 speedo I will send you for the cost of shipping and you have to send a pic of your Camaro to be used on the home page.  Let me know.

Welcome Guenther!
If there is no concession for allowing imported classic cars to retain their mph speedometers, then your best bet is to send a standard mph speedo to one of the U.S.-based instrument and gauge specialist restoration shops to have a kph overlay. The export kph speedos do pop up from time to time, but you might wait a few years for one, and then have to pay big $ to get it.
I have a 69 Camaro 200kph speedo and noted a thread over at a Team Camaro last year where a member sent his for restoration and authorised the restorer to digitise the graphics so they can make an appliqué to convert mph speedos to kph. I would expect that most if not all of the major players could offer a similar service to you for a 67.
You could try contacting Redline Gauges, Instrument Specialties and Bob's Speedometer to discuss options.
Let us know how you get on!

Thanks for all your support guys!! My prefered option right now is to buy a used 67er speedometer and send it to a specialist for kmh modification. I already sent an email to Bob but I am still waiting for his response. Right now I am collecting all options and ideas. Hopefully I will get the car in October/November and then I can start working on it  8). I can´t await it
