67 RS/SS "Numbers Matching on ebay...
« on: February 06, 2015, 01:37:47 AM »
Hello, was just trolling through the camaros on ebay, and saw this car claiming that it is "numbers matching"  The suffix on the engine stamp is "MY" which to my knowledge translates to a 67 or 68 396 (325 HP) with a TH trans.... Am I correct?  The vin is stamped on the block and matches the tag inside the vehicle... so, could it be that this was originally an automatic car instead of a Manual?  Or am I way off?  Thanks!

Check the "Supplemental Operating Instructions" sheet that is in the photos.  Printed on the sheet is "Turbo-Jet 396 Engine" and "Turbo Hydra-Matic Transmission".  So I would think that it probably did have the automatic originally.

Only minor things that caught my attention were:
1-The rear spring perch bolts are aftermarket judging from the exposed thread length. Originals were flush with the end of the nut.
2- The EE paint code didn't get lower rocker blackouts (looks like this has it?)
3- I have never seen an 67 SS 396 Camaro with the front grill emblem that had 396 in it. It was only SS. My opinion is it was more cost effect for Chevy to use the existing SS 350 emblem mold and omit the 350 from the mold and just have it show SS. Almost all aftermarket repros, except one accurate one I have seen, shows SS 396. Both my 67's L35 only have SS on the front grill emblem.
4- Missing GM Mark of Excellence tag on the door side.
5- Where is the antenna base?
6- Wrong disc brake calipers? Looks like '69
7- Trunk lid bolts have no paint on them when they should
8- Do the wheel caps only show Chevrolet Motor Division? Should have Disc Brakes also in the wording

One area I still question on restored 67's is the disc brake options. Both my cars have disc brakes and neither have the disc brake insert in the pedal even with the Z23 option. I have only seen this on restores.

Nice car otherwise even if it was changed from the base 325HP to a 375.

It's in the description: The center console now features a 4-speed manual gearbox where there was originally an automatic, but as I mentioned, the numbers-matching TH400 is available should the new owner desire it.

67 and early 68 did NOT have the disc brake pedal pad.  That started in the early part of the calendar year of 68 (cant remember the exact month and day). ;)

That is GREAT to know! One less thing to ponder about on my list.
Any thoughts on the grill emblem  SS396 vs. just SS for a 396 67?

Thanks,
Mike

I often wondered about the gas cap as well.  Just "SS."  Not SS 396.  I wonder back then if many drivers knew what the blacked out tail pan meant?   They probably figured it out when they seen it "ahead of them" down the street. Lol!  ;D

Early in the 67 year the gas cap actually had "SS 350". My buddy had one. I think when the big block came out, they combined both with just "SS"

Big block cars just had the SS.  Idk where the SS 396 emblem came from except off the Chevelles..  I had heard that because the SS 350 emblem was already in production and when they introduced the 396 they modified the print or casting or both and just had a straight cut on the bottom of the SS of original big block car grille emblems.  To my knowledge the 350 cars still received the SS 350 emblem but I can havent confirmed that yet.  Check your cars and see if the emblem is flat and straight on the bottom.  Might help confirm or disprove the legend.   ;D

I believe the 350 was dropped at the introduction of the 396. only the pre BB SS's had the 350, same as the matching gas caps.

Both of my cars have the flat bottom SS grill emblem. It clearly sounds like Chevy just removed the lower 350 from the SS 350 mold.
Scratch another one off the ponder list :-)

Thanks!
