Another 99K 69 Z/28
« on: June 21, 2014, 07:06:01 AM »
Now this car looks a lot closer to the 99K asking price than the red one IMO.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-Camaro-Z-28-1969-chevrolet-camero-z-28-dusk-blue-numbers-matching-/161342111800?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2590bd4038&item=161342111800&pt=US_Cars_Trucks

Only thing that looked odd to me was the angle and how low the tail pipes sit.

I also don't see the metal line for vacuum from the distributor.

Anyone notice anything else?

I'd guess it was first bow-tie judged and then legend judged the three times (2003, 2004, & 2009). Seems someone is using one of the present price guides which shows #1 condition 69Z at 99K. A nice color for sure.

One of my favorite colors, truly a stunning car.
Agree the tailpipes are at a wild angle though, and are those twin lines on the axle center consistent with original factory inspection marks?

The tailpipes are not adjusted properly. The factory spec was 0.64" from the top of the pipe to the base of the rear body panel. The system used in production had the RH tail pipe welded to the muffler. It was not welded on service replacement systems. Also, should have resonators and too early for chromed tailpipes.

Production E70 x 15 tires for Z/28 and COPO 9737 were Goodyear Wide Tread GT or Firestone Sport Car 200.

was welded in 68 also, why was that ?  Noticed it when I pulled my exhaust out of storage for pics. ( sloppy weld job BTY)

Beautiful car

Don't know why I was thinking wide ovals ,no coffee in me at the time.

They had 2 options for tires on the Z in 69 , either Firestone sports car 200 15" tires, or the Goodyear wide tread GT 15".

Welded because in production it establishes positioning and it's one less part that needs to be fastened. Might not sound like much but at 57 units per hour it adds up.

On the N10 standard system the head pipes were also welded to the resonators but I believe that was an MVSS requirement. Something else that recently came to light is the original production configuration of the "bright metal" tailpipes. The LH tailpipe was the standard 1-pc pipe; the end of it polished raw steel/flash chromed. The RH pipe was 2 pc welded construction with the tip nickel/chrome. Several original systems still exist in this form.

Remember all this if you see a complete NOS exhaust system for big $. Might be NOS but service replacement components were not identical to parts used in production.

Good find Jack. It would have been nice to see page 2 of Jerry's report, to see what he found not correct with the car.

I may have found something it looks like the heat shields on the drivers side do not have the tiny screws on them, but maybe they don't re pop those yet.

Very nice car. It is less than 800 cars before mine was built. All the date codes line up with mine. My transmission was built the same day as this one. Overall, a really nice car. It doesn't show any block, trans or rear end stampings, but I am sure it is in Jerry's report. I really like it.

Just read the report, and they do show the stampings, which look good to me(no expert of course) but I would invite the experts to examine the trim tag rivets. Maybe it's just the picture but they don't look right.

I have a question about the stampings. The partial vin on the transmission and engine do not match. (for instance the font on the 6s is clearly different ). I just recently learned that there are in fact documented cases of this happening but I thought I read they were all really late in the year. This car has a 5A build date. Anyone able to shed some light on this? Did it in fact happen throughout the model year?

While I am not in the know, and see what you are saying, I would think Jerry would have seen enough engine and transmission stamps to know when they should match. Another curious thing for me is why would you have him cert it 3 times??? Just in case someone switched something out at one point?
