Correct Dated Water Pump for 67 L-35
« on: February 13, 2014, 06:28:39 PM »
Like a lot of folks around the country I've spent a lot of time cleaning up and detailing my car. The engine was rebuilt in 87 by the 3rd owner. The water pump was replaced and while I have the car apart I'd like to find a correct 284 water pump. I've seen several on E-bay and was wondering what would be the correct time frame for the date on the pump.  My engine pad is T0106MY, so maybe Nov-Dec 66 time frame?? Any help would be appreciated.   :)

To my understanding, and I know there are others more well versed that will opine, given your example of engine build date of 0106(Jan.6th), that is irrelevant to the water pump date. You should base it on the cars build date, since this component was added on the assembly line, rather than put on at the engine plant. Assuming the car was built, say,Jan 25th, (for purposes of setting an example), a H2O pump dated anytime prior to Jan 25th would be acceptable. Parts where brought in to the plant in large batches and as used and got down close to the bottom of the batch, a new pallet of parts were introduced and in all probability, a worker took out the few remaining old batch and put them on top to ease accessibility (my own hypothesis). Regardless, it is not unheard to have dates as little as a day up to a few months before build date. I will ad, that at 900+ cars a day, parts were used up quickly and therefore a reasonable date would be within 30 days. This is well covered on the site and many postings if you research this. I would put a link to that information, but will let others, since I am not used to doing such.

I would think that would be in the ballpark.  Just like cylinder heads, carbs & intakes as long as you are within a month or two months before the build date of the car I would call it good.  Actually you could probably get away with Oct 66 as well due to the BB becoming available the tail end of Dec first of Jan.

Nope, the water pump was installed at the engine assembly plant.  The water pump casting date must precede the stamped engine assembly date; could be as little as a few days, up to a month or two.

Heads would have to be before eng. build...I know you know this. Intake too! 1968RSZ28_I learned something new, I guess. Thought pumps where added, sorry for any mis-info group. :-\

Yes I was just using them as examples..  I should have said "Just like cylinder heads, intakes as long as you are within a month or two months before the build date of the engine"..  If you go a month or two on the dates of the build date of the car or engine you would be in the clear.

Thanks everyone, and yes I know what this weather can do to you. I live outside of KC, and it finally starting to melt. till got about 10" from drifting in front of my garage door. I found a couple of 284 water pumps on e-bay. Prices seem ok, but when the seller, Goathill Classics came up, I remembered a post from several years back advising doing cash and carry only with them. The e-bay rating seems good, but has anyone done any recent bussiness with them? Again, thanks to all.   :)

I bought a WP and fuel pump from him a few years ago.  I had no problems with him.  I know people have had problems but I didn't.  My fuel pump leaked and he told me to send it back and he got me a new one quickly.

I have a 67 L-35 with 0106 MZ but unfortunately I can not see the date code. It's blocked by the pulley.
If I can find my snake scope camera I will see if I can retrieve it that way.
