Repro Door hinges
« on: November 12, 2013, 12:03:45 AM »
Like many have reported on this site, I continue to be disappointed with many reproduction parts. Why can't these suppliers get this stuff right?

Anyway, can anyone recommend a good source for reproduction door hinges? Mine are pretty worn.

Thanks in advance,

John

8's and 9's are easy to rebuild yourself. 7's are different. If you do not want to do it yourself, send them to Willie. http://hoodhingerepair.com/contactus.html He's done 67 door and hood hinges for me as well as other model cars and trucks. Excellent work. Rebuilds exceed the quality of GM. He does not do 100% original accuracy work for judging purposes. I mic all my pins and bushings for the tightest fit. Tolerances vary and play may be encountered.  A customer once supplied new repro door hinges and they were as sloppy as worn out ones.

Hi John, hope all is well! :)
Why not re-build (bushings) your originals? Even one of my NOS door hinges needed and they were purchased in the 70's.....

I rebuilt 3 out of 4 on my '67 and they came out great. The upper passenger side had no drop and still retained the original nylon bushings.
 The kit cost around $15.

On 67 hinges Willie presses in the detent roller pin as the factory did. He also bronze bushes the detent roller. The 67 repro house rebuild kits use threaded detent roller replacement pins and just regular rollers with no bronze bushing. Some repro rollers are not even hardened and have failed quickly, or the roller threaded pins have snapped. For the price he charges for his machining, media blasting and quality, it's not worth it for me to do 67 hinges on a job.

Willie's 67 bronze bushed detent roller.

The rollers on mine are still original. The passenger side was in fantastic shape and the driver side showed more roller shaft wear but the roller still looked good and didn't have any elongation in it. In the end however the doors open without any drop with the new pins and bushings.
Thanks for the vendors URL though. It's bookmarked in case I need it for when I redo my other 67.

Everyone,

Thanks for the advice. Mine is a '69. Didn't realize you could rebuild the hinges. Will take a closer look this weekend when I am back at the shop.

Chick, nice to hear from you! Was driving through your neck of the woods last week. Almost called to see if you were around.
