396 Engine Code
« on: January 13, 2013, 05:37:59 AM »
I have a 1969 w/396. The orginal protecto plate lists the engine as T0919JQ  The engine on the stamp pad lists the same number T0919JQ. I never saw the JQ code listed for camaros. I've seen it listed as a chevrolete 396/325Hp, but never listed as a camaro engine? Any ideas

Thanks

Your car is either VERY early in production or it is in the late production batch.

First things first was the car assembled in LOS or NOR (look to the left of the Body Number on the Trim tag)?
Second what is the body Number and VIN or just the first 4 if you are worried about something...?
How long have you owned/known about this car?

LOS could have had a JQ engine in the facility as they produced Chevrolet models besides the F-body, NOR gets sketchy as theoretically (without a known shortage etc) they would not have JQ Engines in the plant as only F's were assembled there.

Can you post pics of the protect-o-plate and the Engine stamp (preferably sans paint).

We love to see anomalies around here... anything outside of normal practice makes us wonder & sets us to finding answers.

Manual or automatic trans?  Is it possible the code is JG?  Would you in addition to firstgens request provide the block casting number and date.  Thanks!

The car is a Los car. The Vin# is 124379L504302 The protecto plate shows a P9M31 for the transmission which does match the 4 speed in the car. The rear axle code is BL1003G which also matched the rear end in the car. The car is factory hugger orange. I will post some pics later. The car was in perfect shape then a worker at a shop set the car on fire. Its burnt pretty bad, I just got the car a couple days ago, its not that bad can be rebuilt. Thanks for the info

The car was on TEAM CAMARO and then ebay back in 05. The block isn't the original, but we noted at that time that a prior owner may still have it. The JQ block would be from a 1969 full size car (396/265). The POP is real with a (fairly common) misstamp.

It don't understand, the pop and the engine both match? If the engine is not original it funny that the pop and engine would both be wrong. Any ideas what motor would have come with the car

Thanks,

Dave

It didn't have a motor, but it had a POP (with error). Someone restamped the motor to match the POP.

No way to know for sure. It was either an L35 (396/325 coded JB) or an L34 (396/350 coded JF). More than likely, with the BL axle code it was an L35 since that was the standard axle for that engine. However, it could possibly be an L34 since that was the optional "economy" axle for that engine. Is the transmission an M20 or an M21?

I believe it's a M21. The person I bought it from was trying to tell me it's a M22 but I just took the cover off and it's not a M22. I thinks it's a 21 cause it has the larger pin. but I'm definitely no expert on trasmissions. What you think?

Thanks,

Dave

If you mean the cluster gear pin, that won't help. All Muncie transmissions came with a 1" pin after 1965. Check the number of the distributor if you still have the original. That will tell you for sure what you have.

The part number of the distributor is stamped on the main body. It's either 1111497 or 1111498. Also, what's the date code?

2 grooves is an M20, so that doesn't help since the M20 was available on both the L35 and the L34.
