Decoding/Numbers / Re: Where to find RPO codes?
« on: June 27, 2007, 02:56:35 PM »
Thanks for the info. So far I've ben able to determine that my car was built the 1st week of September 1969. It was built with a 307, 2 BBL carb, PG, non-posi 10 bolt. I think the cowl tag was changed at some time, is there anyway to determine what the body codes were if you can't trust the cowl tag?

Maintenance / Re: Do Heat Shields Work?
« on: June 25, 2007, 05:29:39 PM »
It has been a while, but we used to use "big block" starters in our modified cars- it had heavier windings and never failed to start here in the Texas heat.

I will see if my buddy recalls the details...

I tried that on my 69 SBC, the BBC starter has a different bolt pattern than the SBC unit does, won't work.

1) Remove the 4 shifter bezel screws.
2) Turn the bezel 90 degres and lift the bezel over the shifter.
3) Disconnect the 2 pattern lights and lift the shift pattern plate out.
4) The detent is retained in front by a 7/16 bolt, remove the bolt.
5) The rear of the detent is retained by a large steele rivet, grind the tail of the rivet off.
6) Remove the detent.
7) Install the new detent in reverse order.

Put whatever oil you like best in it, drive it for 500 miles at varying speeds to seat the rings and change the oil after 500 miles, done.

standing on the brakes and reving it is possiblly what may have happened.  I still don't belive that its bent. the guy that looked at it said it bent. When it was on a lift running it didn't look like it was off at all to me. the shaft is strainght to me. it shows no signs of twisting, wrinkles, or dimples. it looks really good for 38 years old

If it's still out of the car take it and roll it on a flat surface, if it's bent you'll see it. a brake dump shouldn't bend a driveshaft unless it's already weak. My 99 T/A is a drag car and I launch at over 4k RPM on an aluminum driveshaft and never hurt it. I wouldn't think checking a driveshaft on a lift wouldn't work very well as the suspension is hanging and probably puts it in a bind instead of loaded like it would be sitting on the shop floor.

how do you bend a driveshaft. i don't race the car

Brake stands!  I've seen it happen to a friend's Nova right before my eyes.   :)

Paul

Did it bend it or twist it? I've twisted a driveshft with my T/A but never bent one.

Not 100% sure about a TH-350 but I know the TH-400's had 2 different length tail shaft housings. If the TH-350 is the same you may have a longer tail shaft housing then what was originally in it possibly putting the driveshaft/u-joints in a bind?

It's a 69. What I need to know is how to remove and reinstall the center console and shifter properly.

I don't think so, I think all you should have to do is change out the shifter detent plate. As far as I can tell the detents are the only thing that is different because of the number of gears.

This weekend I removed the PG that was in my car and installed a TH-350. Now I need to change the shifter detent and shifter pattern glass, is there a write up or instructions on how to remove the center console and change the detent anywhere? TIA
