Restoration / Re: black on tailpan on ss cars
« on: December 20, 2009, 09:12:57 PM »
Charley, I agree with you 100% on being totally enthusiastic about finding survivor cars to inspect and document but just because one car is one way doesn't mean they were all that way…(hell my car has a body colored firewall (no black out) and it came from the factory that way)  But that's why places like CRG is awesome because they compile data on many, many cars before making any call on what the DATA proves.  Unfortunately this is a paint finish dilemma where many factors come into play such as fading, polishing, refinishing, ect...and without a lot of hard evidence it's impossible to say what's absolutely correct here and probably why there’s no definitive right or wrong.  And as for memory fading, how many times do you say to yourself "I could swear it was this way" or "wow, I don't remember it being that way" when going back and referencing pictures or the AIM when working on your car...I know I do it all the time & that's why I took over 700 pictures when pulling my 59000 mile car apart and probably why it got a score of 91.6% correct my first year in legends concours.  Just saying the original owner may remember it one way, and the car may only have 26000 miles on it but it’s still 40 years old and even if the owner only washed & waxed it once a month, that’s still 480 times that panel and paint have been buffed and rubbed on.  Even at a ¼ of that number semi gloss will be getting pretty shiny.
Again, just my opinion and opinions are like a**holes, everyone’s got one! ;D

Any hint towards what the other publication would be?  Would love to read it!

LOL, or maybe not...memory fades with time & age but to each his own.  To bad those pic's on the dealer lot weren't better.

Are you saying "I bet not" because you think the owner repainted it ?  Because you are stuck on it being semi gloss ?

No, not repainted, just stuck on the fact that Lacquer becomes shinier the more you rub on it.  Could be that way now from years of polishing or even some inexperienced or over zealous prep guy at the dealer hit it with a wheel before he even saw the car to buy it.  I’ll even buy firstgenaddict’s theory of grabbing the wrong gun or my spin on it, problem with the semi-gloss gun and using full gloss until the semi was fixed but firmly believe they were all supposed to be semi from the factory.

Any chance the original owner has some pictures of that tail panel from when he/she bought the car?  I bet not.

The Camaro Nationals back in the late 1990's and early 2000 period, was run under the World Wide Camaro Club organization, which dissolved and got absorbed by Ecklers.   The WWCC would hold national events at different locations each year.  The events I attended were in Pigeon Forge, TN, Stone Mountain, GA, and Columbus, OH.

Didn't know that.  Had Camaros all my life but didn't start participating in judged events until around 02 and being that the ACA had it’s 11th show this year I thought they were the only ones who had “Camaro Nationals”

Over the years, I have met owners of very nice survivor Camaros that "get the itch" to restore their cars to look top notch like many we see at shows.  I always praise the owner for what they have, and how rare a clean original Camaros are today, and encourage them to keep what they have as is.  Our cars are only original once.

I agree and do the same now since it seems once you touch something it opens up that "that's not how it was" door  :D

Yep that's the listing I saw.  So my 12D came with a 29 from the factory???  I always thought the 25 was correct...but had to have the embossing on the bottom for 68.  Now being corrected, what years was the embossing on a 25 "factory correct"?  Learn something new every day...

Thanks Ed.

Originality / PF25 or 29 oil filter for 68
« on: October 02, 2009, 05:06:43 PM »
Just saw this on ePay and was wondering if there's any truth to it?

According to my 1968 dated GM parts book,a PF29 or 6437946 is the first spin on

oil filter for all 68 models Impala Nova corvette chevelle camaro with V8 engines

327 396 427.  Pf 25 came out in 1969 so would NOT be correct.

General Discussion / Re: Engine Mounting

Damond,
Looks like the frame mounts are aftermarket-are they? Can anyone else confirm on that last pic looking at the middle mounting bolt of the frame stand and it being almost centered in relation to the tower and the fact it's hanging so far off the frame that it's the frame mount setting the engine too far back?  Shouldn't the hole be more rearward there by pulling the whole assy forward?  My car's a BB so I’m not sure with the SB stands but that just doesn't look right...

I'm with you John.  Again, what's the process?
So I'm confused, being a non-resident of NC, you stop at the weigh station as you enter the state, they weigh you and if you’re under/over 10,001 they do what???  And being a non-resident, non-commercial, how are you even supposed to know you’re supposed to stop?  What other states have this BS law?

Damond,
Could you post some pic's of what your looking at with the distributor/firewall?  Also, any close-ups of the engine and frame mounts.  I went through your posts and saw a lot of pic's of the frame when you (or buddy) had it out but no real good close-ups of either of the engine or frame mounts-hopefully you have some.  Did see you had an issue with the block hugger headers rubbing a engine mount though so that's got me wondering about them.  What's the casting number of the block?  Also, I know you said you measured the wheelbase but you should really double check the frame to body alignment holes too.
You would think things like this would be easy to figure out, and when their not, I love finding out what it was!

Thanks Kurt.  It's one of those things I just really paid no attention to, especially since it was bought under the assumption it an original WT master...and being so I never really looked for others or had anything to compare it to.  And funny thing is it went through first year of concours without a word!  I'm having problems with it now anyway so I'll just keep my eyes peeled for a REAL original one.
As always, THANKS Guys!

My first experience with "correct" hardware vs. my car's build date was during the 1000 point judging completed on my '69Z during the 2000 Camaro Nationals in Columbus, OH.  I

I believe the only place Camaro Nationals is held is in Carlisle Pa hosted by The American Camaro Association.  I think the show you’re referring to is the PPG Nationals?

I have been tying to ID details such as hardware and component date codes for fun.  Survivor cars are great to look at and study!

Me too...and I'm sure you’re amazed by some of the stuff you see!!!  All to many times these cars get grouped into the idea that things can only be "one way" and it's just not true.  I understand that the judging process has to have a standard to go by, and CERTAIN things DID in fact only happen one way, but everyone must remember these were MASS PRODUCED CARS built in the 60's by people who were just "doing their job"  Anomalies and every day life happened, just as they do today, and things changed throughout the production year; even if it wasn't always caught on paper.

WOW, didn't notice that until you pointed it out...not to surprised if it though as it was bought through a certain vendor many years ago.  Pretty sure I tossed my original years ago too....before I knew better.  Ahh well...live & learn!!  At least I know what to look for now...
Thanks again Ed.
