Maintenance / Re: Voltage regulator not working properly?
« on: March 28, 2006, 05:51:48 PM »
I am looking at using the VR715 voltage regulator as well for reliability.  Does anyone know if the 'guts' of the solid state unit can be swapped onto the base of an original Delco unit?  I hate to get rid of my NOS regulator that has the correct date code & part number stamped on the base.  The NOS unit has small adjustment knobs on it, but I have never had good luck adjusting them in the past.

Contact C.A.R.S. - see www.carsinc.com.  They show the houndstooth covers available with black, parchment, and white vinyl.  I assume that the white is really ivory.  I purchased my black/houndstooth covers from them and they are truly a work of art.  Each set is hand made on an as-ordered basis, so they should be able to make you a set with any color vinyl that you want.  I hope this helps you a little.

I had D & M restore my Tic-Toc-Tach.  They do very nice work.

I believe that the Power Beam lights were replacements that became available in the early 1970's.

Maintenance / Re: Fuel Filter Relocation

Thanks John.  Now...I'm afraid to ask.....if the carb was 'fixed' using the parts store kit in the past, do you think there is any way to salvage the casting?  Mine was fixed like this, but I still have the original piece.  I will probably send it to Camaro Hi-Performance for the rebuild/restoration.  Hopefully they will have access to a replacement casting if required.

Maintenance / Fuel Filter Relocation
« on: January 25, 2006, 05:28:41 PM »
I have a 68 Camaro with the L30 327.  The Q-jet carb has a small filter built into the inlet, and the threads for the retainer are a bit chewed up (which I guess is common).  I intend to have the carb rebuilt/restored, but I do not want to have to deal with this filter in the future.  I also do not want to use an in-line filter between the fuel pump and carb because I would like everything under the hood to look original.  What are my options?  Can I use a filter located in the rubber line back by the fuel tank?  Is it bad to put a filter in upstream of the fuel pump?
Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff

Keep an eye on the classified ads over at Team Camaro (http://www.camaros.net/classifieds/).  You may also want to contact Bob Mayle at Stainless Trim Restoration (www.stainlessresto.com or 716-683-4018).  Bob is a very nice guy and he did a fantastic job restoring my reveal moldings.  He was reasonably priced as well.  I believe that he can weld the holes and restore the moldings.  Keep us posted on your progress.

Check out this link for a picture of my Ash Gold w/ white top car.  The picture is at the bottom of the page:

That picture was taken July 6, 1968.

Go for the white top!  I have a 68 Ash Gold L30/M20 with Ivy Gold deluxe interior and a white convertible top and it looks great.  It's a very nice color combo.  My father bought the car new back in 1968.

Now, finding Ivy Gold interior parts can be very frustrating.  I tried upholstery from everyone I could find, and none matched my original interior color.  Most vinyl was just too gold, while my original was gold with a touch of green.  However, the carpet from ACC was a perfect match.

After years of aggravation, I ended up changing my interior to black w/houndstooth inserts.  The covers came from CARS and are truly works of art.  I know the deluxe houndstooth wasn't available on convertibles, but it looks sooooooo good with the Ash Gold exterior.  I saved all of my original Ivy Gold parts just in case I want to ever change back.

Good luck with the project - it's a great looking car.

Restoration / Front Sheet Metal Paint/Assembly Sequence
« on: January 14, 2006, 11:14:40 PM »
My car is at the paint shop.  The painter wants to edge the front fenders then install them and paint them on the car.  I think that it will be better to paint them off the car.  Any comments/suggestions?  I'm not a paint & body expert, and I don't want to make a request that will upset my body guy.
Also, if the fenders are painted off the car, should the inner fenderwells be bolted to the fenders prior to installing them?  I did a test install of the fenderwells first, then the fenders and it was a little tricky getting the fenders mounted.  I wonder how it was done at the factory.
I'm sure some of you have been through this installation many times and can offer some great tips.  Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff
