IF I CAN'T FIND THE CORRECT DATED PART FOR MY 68 Z/28 CAMARO WHAT WOULD BE BETTER, A PART WITH AN OLDER DATE OR A NEWER DATE?

jonboy1216

good question i would like to know myself.im sure somebody could help us with this topic

Jrschev

I would say neither. If it's not within the generally accepted 'date range" then it's not. Being earlier or later (outside the parameter) makes no difference at that point. There is a general parameter for dating for just about all parts and pieces and they vary widely depending on the part in question.  Some components like engine castings are relatively close to assembly dates but then things like outside mirrors seem to have months of "range". It's a difficult science if you will and it takes a lot of research to be accurate.

I have an all original 68 Z/28 with a build date of April 1st week 68, but the engine blew, beyond repair, so I need a block and 1 head. The good head has a casting date of C228(March 22 1968). Pitched the block sometime back and don't have the numbers on it. So I'm thinking the block should be dated around the same time as the head, give or take 1 or 2 days. The block casting should be 3914678 and I've been searching for 6 months and the closest I've found is March 8 68 and Ive found a pair of 3917291 heads with March 13 th and 28 th dates.

My 68 Z  has a build date of 02E from LOS. The engine is a January block and the heads are November 67 castings. The original guy that I bought the car from said it was all original as he was the One and only owner. Take it for what it is ,dates were rarely as close to the build date as some argue.

The March 8th block will work fine with your date.

please keep the original block even if it is in pieces for the next buyer of your car

fireZ

Yes the original block for my car was in the trunk when I bought the car with cracks in the #2 and # 8 cylinders.. I just had 2 cylinders sleeved recently and am in the process of having the engine put back together. Does not matter what shape it is in do not get rid of it.

bought the car back in 72 and at the time didn't know how valuable they would become. probably melted down long ago. My bad!

It happens I was just lucky the original owner of my car had a brother that was the servise manager at the dealership my Z was from. The owner kept the motor as a reminder of how not to drive thses cars for his kids. Guess I am  got lucky
