RS/SS options

I went to a Car Show this past weekend and saw a few cars (67 and 68) the were RS/SS  that were showing as original but none of them had 350's or 12 bolt rear ends. What was the "rule of thumb" when these two options were purchased together? I would have thought the SS package would override the RS and force the 350 and 12 bolt rear end. But now I have no clue

RS is just an appearance package, available on any car.
SS required a 350 or a 396 (and a 12 bolt in 67/68).

Those cars sound like clones.

Thanks for the reply. I had always thought that was the case, but I was never sure and then after this weekend, I was really confused. Every thing I had read here at CRG led me to believe that the only way a Carmaro could be a SS in 67 and 68 was to be purchased with at the mininum, a 350 and a 12 bolt rear end.

Here is a classic example of what I saw this weekend. I know E-Bay is probably not the best place to look but I could not believe the first car I looked at under 1968 Item number 130014070084, it is actually a "67 but it states "true" RS/SS California car, it has a 327 and a 10 bolt!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to see at least 5 cars similar to this one at the car show, stating all original or numbers matching or "true" RS/SS.

The SS package was basically an engine package, i.e. 350 or 396. So was the Z/28, i.e. 302; RS was an appearance package which could be ordered on any Camaro.
