What is the correct air cleaner for the 396-325 Pace car? I have seen open element and snorkel cleaners.

The original owner of my 325 automatic car gave me a few pics of my car when it was a few weeks old. It definatley shows an open element air cleaner and chrome valve covers. BUT the air cleaner appears to be black, not chrome. I've seen a few  snorkels on what seem to be original cars too. A yellow low mileage '67 at Carlisle is one that comes to mind.

All that I've seen have been open element with either a chrome or painted black top.

Out here in CA I have seen 396-325 cars with the chrome or black lid on the open element air cleaner and also I have seen some with the snorkel air cleaner. I have not been able to determine the reason behind three different styles. I originally thought the snorkel air cleaner may have been due the CA smog equipment but then I saw many examples of the open element air cleaner on definite original CA cars.

Is the black semi-gloss? That's what my pictures look like. Thanks.
