I have Jerry's book which specifies starter paint color.  (30-60 Percent Gloss Black)  How far does the paint extend.  Is the nose all black, all cast or partially black?  Also, is the Solenoid metal case black?  I have a 69 SS 396-325 built in September of 69.  Thanks for your help.

The consensus here is the solenoid's body could be either black or a natural metal finish. Although most opt for the metal finish. Here is an 1108361 I purchased for my 69 L48 (SB-350). It was rebuilt by the late Mr. John Pirkle, one of the best in the business.

Thanks Marty. I appreciate the help.

Working as a Chevrolet line tech from 1971 to 1990, I rebuilt many starters.  As far as I can remember, on starters with Aluminum noses, the noses were natural unpainted, and starters with cast noses, the noses were painted.  The solenoids were always natural and the starter frame was always painted black. My memory isn't perfect, but I did do a lot of starters.
