Correct finish for A Arm large outer washers, smaller washers and bolts as well as sub frame washers and bolts............zinc or silver cad?

Are you familiar with AMK and their catalog?  It's available on-line. 

What I do when I need to determine a bolt/nut/fastener finish is first locate the bolt PN in the AIM;  The AMK catalog has an appendix that lists the GM part number and lists the page number in their catalog where the part can be found.   Thereafter, they have a code that lists the finish.  On page 6 of their catalog, they list the finish codes.  Seems complicated, but I have this to be pretty efficient and accurate.

This was discussed elsewhere recently.

Upper control arms were assembled to the shaft with the bushings and all hardware. At that point they were painted black; dipped or sprayed. The ball joint and bumper were added later.

Are you sure about the hardware William? Know the a-arm, shaft and bushings were dip painted as an assembly but was not aware of the other hardward attached.

So that means that all the 69 Camaro restso's or claimed untouched originals with large silver bushings and bolt heads that are silver finished on the upper control arms located in the engine compartment protruding from the inner fender wells are not correct. Further all bushing sleeves that show a natural metal finish are not correct since they should have been painted black as well along with the rubber sleeve. Very interesting??........then why are my original untouched bushing sleeves natural metal finish and not black since the entire assembly was sprayed or dipped. Our original to the car upper A arm bushings that have not been replaced as far as we can tell since the rubber is  VERY worn and still have Harris markings on the rubber and there is no black paint on those pieces!   I'll take your word for the finish but am a bit curious. Thanks for the input.

It could be that those parts you cite were a bit 'oily' from manufacture, and thus the 'black paint' didn't stay on very long ....

You're not taking my word for this; it came from a Manufacturing Engineer who worked there.

And 69Z28-RS is correct; the paint probably didn't adhere well. There was no surface prep at all and the shafts may have been oily from the machining process.

I have a large collection of '60s vintage magazines with Camaro features. I just dug through them and managed to find an engine bay photo where both A-arms are visible: Popular Hot Rodding July '68. They tested a '68 Camaro SS L35 auto. The washers and bolts are clearly black.

Referring to your bolt question in the a-arm and sub-frame they were phosphate and not Zinc nor silver cad. The original A-arm large washers as far as I know were silver zinc.

Chick,  Great thanks how about the bolts (heads) and washers finish? mine are head stamped RBW with lines at 12 5 and 8 o'clock

Washers phosphate and RBW bolts are very common. A lot of RBW bolts in our 68 including #2 & #3 sub-frame mtg. bolts.

Thanks Chick will get those originals restored properly. Finish on the bolt heads? repro's are dark gray, assume phosphate?

Yes Michael, phosphate! You can find phosphate info with the search key. I as many purchased the solution from Palmetto Enterprises (http://www.palmettoenterprises.net/P...-Welcome-.html). Lot's of info on this phosphate process doing searches as well. Very easy process with the biggest thing being bolt/fastener prep (glass bead best).
