Hello everyone. I have a '69 L78 that had no mufflers when I bought it.  Instead, I think it has what are called "firecrackers?"  A bit loud for my taste and I'd like to get regular old mufflers for it. My questions are: Is there such a thing as "date-coded or "proper mufflers for this 5E build? And, I've seen 2 different configurations in photos, one with 2 separate mufflers and another with one transversely oriented muffler in front of gasoline tank. ?crossflow?  Jerry's book shows only the single crossflow pattern.  Are all the pics of the 2 separate mufflers incorrect for this car? Thanks!

Thanks! Great reading! Ever hear of a "firecracker" in an exaust line?  Could that be a "resonator?" It has the same shape as the resonators in the diagrams.

He clarifies about the correct muffler, etc.

Yes, the term "firecracker" is used to describe that motorcyle-like exhaust popping. A resonator should actually diminish that sound.  (Technically, all mufflers resonate sound.)
And yes, some folks don't like that sound, including the police.

GlassPacks were about the closest thing to open exhaust.  Is that what you are thinking of?  They are basically just a tube w/ some fiberglass packing that would eventually burn off.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but I was wondering if anyone makes a transverse muffler that has the "deep tone". I like the sound but I don't  like the looks of the 2 muffler system.

The Pypes Racepro transverse-mount muffler has a pretty nice sound!

Here's a pic of the contraption on the car now. (Hope the pic uploaded.)

Looks like a pair of glasspacks, not a transverse muffler.

I'm going to put a single crossflow muffler.  What do you think of resonators vs. no resonators?  I'm looking for a subtler growl that doesn't get dirty looks from the neighbors.
