During the 1968 model year production, the themperature sending unit boss was plugged on a Z28 intake.   Does anyone know what the steel square drive plug looked like on a 3917610 Z28 intake?  Was it a female or male plug?  I have seen it both ways.  Does it depend on Los vs Nor build, or early vs late production?

That is for the water-pump bypass hose. The temperature sending hole was on the other side of the oil fill pipe. Mine is a female plug like the one you are showing but to the other side

ok then.  Water by-pass plug.  Thanks.  I was told it was the Temp boss.  I have it right on my set-up.  Anyway, ever seen a female plug?

It should look like this...

Thanks Paul.  Nice looking manifold.  I had it set-up for a guage at the head and the idiot light off the manifold.  The car is not an original Z.    Ever seen a female plug used, from the factory, in either boss?

Yes, only in the boss on the top of the intake next to the thermostat housing.  I've never seen one in the boss shown in your first photo as that is where the pipe fitting for the coolant bypass hose would be placed.
