DZ Block Vin

I have a 69 DZ block and the area where the vin should be ( at the oil filter ) is very rough. Can't see any numbers. I was wondering what would be the best way to make the numbers readable without taking a chance on destroying them. Thanks

No, unfortunally I don't have the car. I have tried crayon and marker with no luck.

Before resorting to chemicals, I would try different lighting effects (straight on multiple angles, and intensities. I would also try several crayons, and rubbings (paper over area, rub with a pencil) Vin stampings could also be near the engine code stamping: http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#partialVINs

The acid does not hurt the block or the stamping..when i did it anyway. Just clean the area, sand it if you need to then put it on with a cotton swab. You can  sit there and watch it do its thing. When you see the numbers you just put on the Neutralizer and put a bit of oil on it so it dose not rust. Its made for this purpose

Thanks guys, I think I will try the acid. There are no numbers by the engine code. Have tried lights and crayons with no luck. Again, thanks for all the help. This is a great site!!!!

Nothing wrong with using a good old fashioned wire brush!
I have just been through the same and it worked fine.  ;)

Dont use sand paper or a wire brush on the engine pad. You will ruin the broach marks if there are any.

Good call, of course proceed with caution, but my numbers were in the rough casting of the block and there is no way would sandpaper or a wire brush remove anything that is was not meant to, ie: paint and grime etc.  8)
