Is there anyway to identify the torque converter?

I guess it would quite a stretch to say it's original to the car then.

Woops, I missed that it is dated 68 model year. Too late for your car, it would have been T7xxxx.

Unfortunate! I'm not familiar, no vin on Powerglides?

Being a 68, probably does have a VIN, probably near the bellhousing flange.

Safe to say, this is not the transmission that came in my car from the factory.

/edit Looks like it possible came from a 1969 El Camino assembled at the Fremont Plant.

I was a bit confused by the examples on the trans page.

Examples:

     R7S21  Saginaw 4-speed, Nov 21, 1966
     P8R01  Muncie M2x 4-speed, Oct 01, 1967
     P9T11B Muncie M21 4-speed, Dec 11, 1968
     C9D14N PowerGlide M35 2-speed auto,
            Apr 14, 1969, night shift

In the case of manual transmissions the numbers seem to indicate a year early, but I see in the powerglides it is different.

No, that's the model year vs calendar year. https://www.camaros.org/geninfo.shtml#modelyear

The stamp must be T9M22D.
