Does anyone know which of the 2 setups are correct for a 68 Z?  My repro stuff doesn't fit my Muncie.  Which reverse lever is correct?  Does the reverse swith and mount go like the first picture or the second?  Thanks.

68Z -

My Van Nuys built '68 Z/28's back-up lamp switch, bracket, and linkage is set up like your second illustration.  It's Muncie M21 is original (VIN stamped twice), as is all the related transmission components!    :)

Illustration like my car attached:

Good luck!

Wow.  Something's wrong then.  The repro looks like that but the linkage (6) for the reverse witch linkage doesn't fit.  But if it's right, it's either the length of the little rod is wrong or the adjustment is wrong on the lreverse rod.  Thanks Paul.

I bought a rod years ago for my car, it was in a GM package. I don't remembe the p/n but can probably look it up. I remember it was longer than one I found at a swap meet on an original switch. That's probably the problem. You could probably make a rod that will work if you need to mock something up.

The first drawing is for a Saginaw trans.

I don't remember exactly, but I think mine was too short.  I was going to make one, but I was in a hurry to start it up and drive it.  Thanks all.

I had the same problem with the length of the rod also, too long. I just bent it to fit. It works fine, just doesn't fit like an original one.

Here's an original NOS rod that sold yesterday for $264.89!!    :o

I saw that and said no thanks.  I made mine work.

I had the same problem on my 67 Z.  The parts book shows two different rods and part numbers.  The ones you can get repop do not fit so I got some steel rod and made my own.  By the way, the same is true for the stabilizer shifter rod - the repop did not fit and the books show two different part numbers.  Any thoughts guys on where to locate the right one?

Hey, thanks for the pics (I know this is from a year ago :) )  but it finally identified one of my mystery parts, number 8 in the second pic.  Its a shield! Is the shield the same on SS small block and big block and Z/28?  I have to get the wording right on ebay  ;D  It wont fit my 69s! thanks

The shield was only used on Muncie applications (all SS and Z/28); it wasn't used on the Saginaw 4-speed.

Nope - that's a Saginaw 4-speed, which has the reverse lever in the side cover. The 3-speed column shift backup light switch is on top of the steering column under the dash, and the 3-speed floor shift backup light switch is on the transmission, shown in sectiion M13, sheet A1.
