When did Chevrolet switch from stamping the engine vin number on the front pad to stamping it in the rough casting by the oil filter ?

Based on that CRG quote that Tim posted, I don't think there is enough original block cars to verify or map out what months or days it was stamped in one place vs the other. I would think if you found a guy with an original block Camaro who's car was made the same day as yours, then it may correspond to his.
(BTW it is Van Nuys..😁)

It seems this has been discussed before, and when I asked about it I was told that it varied and went back and forth between locations.
Is there new information you can shed on this?

Ok,  well to continue then, when I asked: it was not known why or when (specifically) they changed back and forth. Perhaps the CRG now knows specific dates but doesn't let it be known, or it was known then, but Kurt or people in the know did not chime in on the thread to let it be known the information had already been gathered.
So are you alluding that it is in the data base then?

In my records I have 1 mid Febuary, 1mid March and 1 mid April stamped on the pad. At the time I had an 03C LOS car 19L526889 and was looking for a  DZ block.

The 1,100 mile Van Nuys 1970 Z28 was vin stamped on the pad.

Are those dates you reference from the autos' 'engine assembly stamping'?  or from a 'known' vehicle assembly date?

My (limited) understanding was this tended to be a GMAD-Van Nuys (pad) vs Fisher Body-Norwood ( casting near oil filter) "rule".  Once the Norwood plant went GMAD in 72, it went to the pad by the alternator.  Is this true or total hogwash?

As I remember, the Fed's required all manufacturers since the 1968 model years forward, that all VINs be stamped on the engine blocks. Some of the brand 'X' cars also had them stamped on the transmissions, and rear ends. That said, did the GM assembly plants like Van Nuys and Norwood have different procedures from plant to plant? I believe they may have.

I was specifying dates of car assembly when the vins were assigned to vehicles, but it doesn't really matter. Semantics seems to trump my intension or inquiry. I just paraphrased what I remembered from another thread at the time.

I agree from what has been listed in the research that each plant did things differently in regards to the Vin stamp. ( I am sure someone could pick this statement apart as well though) 😃
