I have been going through my storage containers to organize the parts I have acquired over the last 35 years and just found a 1969 Z-28 block which has a stamp pad showing VO927DZ and the partial VIN # on the oil filter flange shows 9L5034 and I can't make out any other numbers, so my question is based on the build date of the VIN wouldn't this be a Sept. 27Th 1968 built engine and if so wouldn't the partial VIN be on the engine pad? As I am cleaning out these containers I will post the orphan blocks and  transmissions.

For that time frame I have seen them down by the oil filter. It seems it was not consistent though. Can you post some pics?

From the DRIVETRAIN DECODING page:

QuoteIn the 1969 model year, the partial VIN for V8 engines was stamped in either of two locations: on the engine pad or near the oil filter. The alternator was moved to the passenger side in 1969 which covered the engine stamp pad and caused the VIN stamp to be relocated by the oil filter. The block in this area is raw unmachined casting which makes this stamp difficult to see. Generally, the Norwood plant stamped the VIN on the engine pad on early cars and moved the stamp by the oil filter in the December 68 timeframe (there are a few known exceptions). Los Angeles was not as consistent and the VIN stamp location varied during the year.

I know of a very original 09D LOS Z, 9L502xxx, engine assembly date Sept 13, with partial down by the oil filter. Has the PoP, invoice etc.
If possible, please post of picture of the pad stamp and partial VIN on your block. Thanks!

Hi Austin, I sent the high resolution ones to your email and a couple of extras which detail the vin better.
