Title: X44 Wheel Openings
Post by: R68GTO on March 22, 2019, 08:34:54 PM
My 1969 X44 car had X11 trim (wheel opening moulding, quarter louvers, & drip rail chrome) added in the late 1970's.  The car is now under restoration and I intend to bring it back to the X44 configuration.  My question is related to the wheel openings and what holes if any were in the rear quarter openings, front fender openings, and lower fender pieces for the trim?  I'm assuming that on X44 cars, no trim holes existed, but want to be sure on this one.

I just un-style trimmed my X66 car. All the screw holes in the rear wheel lips & the 2 on the fender extensions. I actually ask your same question about a year ago....Joe

That really surprises me that you could buy a new car with holes in the wheel openings with nothing in them ???, but hey, I'm seem to learn something new every day on these cars.  Thanks Joe!

Only the screw holes in the quarters and front fender extensions need to be filled. All cars had the bolt holes in the front fenders to retain the inner fenders.  They did not drill holes for molding screws and leave the molding off.

I have an ultra low mileage X22 car in my garage that the screws from the fender extensions are missing. After careful inspection they were not there when the car was built....no hole. The owner wanted me to put the screws in & I told him this was a factory mess up & today I would not want to fix that.

Only the screw holes....not the bolt holes....Joe

Ok, now I want to make sure I got this straight......
1) X44 cars had no holes in the rear quarter panel opening
2) X44 cars only had bolt holes in the front fender opening necessary to attach the inner fenders
3) Any other holes in the wheel openings on an X44 car should not be there

Rear molding holes were drilled as required.

Front fender moldings attach with existing inner to outer fender attaching bolts.  One tiny screw hole is drilled into the front fender extension as required.

Actually there are 2 holes for the fronts that would need to be drilled...
