Looks like a best offer was accepted, not even the full $3,000.

Is the chrome lid correct? My repop has a black lid which I thought was correct.

As supplied by GM, the lid was black. I have seen maybe 4 or 5 where an owner has chosen to chrome plate the lid.

Good stuff ...... The cowl induction setup was a well engineered piece of kit that really preformed well.

Definitely a neat system. I imagine that the DOT wasn't too keen on them for a backfire thru the carburetor-would go into the passenger compartment thru the vents and light them up! These systems supplied colder air but I think a lot of people missed that they also increased manifold pressure. Did any racers block off all passages to the interior vents and rocker panels to provide even more pressure on the carb(s)??

I don't have specific knowledge of a car that did that but I would think that it did happen.

Thanks for the pictures and information about those air cleaners, cold air induction. I will have to scratch build one for my Alan Green Camaro's 1/25 scale project.

Cheers,

Jim Bowman sent me a message to say that his "Monterey High School" Camaro did block off all access to the interior and rocker panels for the cowl plenum air duct. Jim's car ran mostly A/Sedan races but was entered in the 1970 Riverside Trans-Am. It didn't make that race due to troubles during practice. Even though Jim'c car ran a '67 grille it was a '68 body. The red outline highlights the aluminum plate covering the area where the interior air duct was attached to the cowl plenum.

Interesting, not too surprising blocking the interior vents, but I was really wondering about the ducts down the outboard plenum boxes to the rocker panels. Any pictures available showing how they were blocked?  Seems there would be a nice advantage to closing them off too. Neat pictures!

If anyone else was on to this, I would imagine that Smokey Yunick was right at the forefront-would be nice to have a little look at Vics maybe?

Looking at Vic's car would not give you an accurate view of Smokey's work, as the car has been rebodied. The original body could not be saved due to acid dipping and later corrosion.

It's a shame to lose those pieces of history.
The sad truth with race cars is they probably have a half dozen parts that are original to them. The trail of parts left behind must be extensive.

The original '67-'68 AC air filter has a brownish colored paper in it which makes it appear dirty, but it isn't. The
AC part number is embossed into the rubber on the top of the filter and it looks a bit different than later years.
Note that the screen mesh is square but at a 45 degree angle and has little balls of solder where each bit of wire
intersects. The AC part number for the filter is A226CW but there are subtle changes as the years progress.

The '69 version of this A226CW still has the brownish paper and the wording has changed on the rubber top.
It now has an expanded metal mesh which is no longer square but is essentially a diamond shape.

By 1971, there was white paper in the filter and the part number was simply ink stamped in white on the rubber.

I wanted to add some info to this thread I recently shared with Jon as we have another filter to add between the early 67/68 version Jon showed vs. the 5/20/69 dated boxed filter version. Remember the 5/20/69 changed the type of font embossed and the screening was much different. This used filter I'm adding to the mix was in our air cowl plenum when we purchased our 68 Z/28 in the early 80's so I have no idea of its original origin but it would indicate it was between the early 67 and 69 dated versions. It has the same embossed font as the 5/20/69 filter but incorporates the same screening as the early 67 version. In other words as Jon wrote, "It has the mesh from the '67 style and the embossed lettering from the '69 style."
