Trim Tag Question
« on: June 19, 2012, 10:08:59 PM »
Is this a Nov.68 tag or a Nov.69? The body number seems too low for a Nov. 69. but it has the D80 code. Another fake ?  :'(

It's for a '69, body numbers were re-set late in the year so this is why it would seem low.

I think it was August or September 69 that the body numbers were reset.

Since the numbers were reset is it possible that 2 tags (one early and one late) could have the same number?

The 69 production year started in August 1968 if I remember right at 500001. This sequence was used for both assembly plants and since they were assigned centrally 500001 could have been assembled by Chevrolet at Norwood, while 500002 could have been assembled by GMAD at Van Nuys - Los Angeles.  So no duplicates there.

In August of 1969 the central office reset the number to 100000 at Norwood for Chevrolet assembly to account for the extended 69 run, and GMAD Van Nuys - Los Angeles retooled all its lines for the 70 model year on schedule except Camaro. GMAD had not produced any vehicles in May due to a full strike, and less than 1000 Camaro's in June and under 150 in July. No additional Camaro's were assembled at GMAD Van Nuys - Los Angeles until the new 70 body was tooled up.  By the time extended production ended in November 1969 Norwood had only produced approx 42,803 vehicles under the 100000 sequence.

So to answer your question. No duplicates would exist unless the tag is a fake or a fluke.

Yes you could have to trim tags with the same body number, but different VINs.  Body numbers started at 100001 and went up to somewhere around 360000 throughout the 69 production year up to late July.  Numbers were split between LA and NOR, but once the body numbers reset in August of 69 they went back to 100001 at Norwood, and climbed back up to somewhere around where this tags number is.  So there are duplicates throughout that range for Norwood built cars.  BUT, the early tags are a different shape and size than the later tags in this overlap range.

http://www.camaros.org/bodynumbering.shtml goes into more detail.

Some 1968 11A cars used the larger tag, so tag size isn't a discriminator.

I've seen several pairs of cars that have the same body number, just built in different calendar years. And VIN's will be very far apart. :)
